WASHINGTON — Companies and groups hiring lobbying firms on health issues nearly doubled this year as special interests rushed to shape the massive revamp of the nation's health care system now in its final stretch before Congress.

About 1,000 organizations have hired lobbyists since January, compared with 505 during the same period in 2008, according to a USA TODAY analysis of congressional records compiled by the nonpartisan CQ MoneyLine.

Overall, health care lobbying has increased, exceeding $422 million during the first ninth months of the year, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks money in politics. That's more than any other industry and a nearly 10% jump over the same period in 2008. The center's Dave Levinthal said the frenzy of new lobbying activity makes financial sense.

"If lobbying didn't work, people wouldn't do it," he said.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washing...th-lobby_N.htm

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is for those of you who think only unions "buy" politicians... if you look look a little closer, you'll find that just as many, and maybe even more, companies "buy" politicians as well... even individuals... it is everyone's right to lobby their Congressman, Senator, or public official... that's the way the game is played... and this health care reform is going to be a biggie for a lot of companies, organizations, and individuals who want to do all they can to shape the final bill...

Despite my uber-frustration, I am not ready to throw in the towel, but damn if this doesn't look like a Herculean task:

Pitt: I still see a possible win, esp. if Big Ben isn't right

@ GB: If the D plays like it has the past few weeks, I think the Ravens win

Det: The one thing the Ravens have done consistently this year is beat the dregs. Win.

Chi: See Det.

@ Pitt: Tough, tough, tough.

@ Oak: If this is a win or go home, this may be tougher than we think - ask Cin, but still should win.

So beat the teams you should (Det, Chi & Oak), win 2 of 3 from the Pitt/GB games and the record is 10-6. It can still definitely happen. None of the other potential Wild Card teams (Pitt, Hou, Jax, Mia, Den) are world beaters.

Matt Birk is a very good pass blocking Center. His run blocking just doesn't seem to be nearly at the same level. If your Center can't get a push on short yardage it makes it very tough on the Guards . We used to have this problem with Mike Flynn later on in his career. I'm not sure if there is anything these older and smaller Centers can do to fix it since it really is a power issue. That could by why Cam has all but given up on the power run game. With Birk there instead of Brown he might not have a choice.

Where there missed calls? yes, however they seemed to missed a little more equally.

So I can live with these ref's. They did an ok job and did not "job" us as completely as other ref's have.

Again it was not perfect. However, it was not unfair, as several other games this year. CALL'EM equal, what you call on Purple should be called on ever other team when it happens.

This game I can live with. The ref's did not tilt the game.

Players play and ref's should go un-noticed.

After the Denver game the offense is starting to go backwards. Sure Mason had over 100 yards and Rice is still doing his thing but if we cant score we are the team of last year. Big difference that our team of last year was a lot better on D so we cant think to go backwards. Just gets old when Clayton and now even Washington are not even in the game. We mine as well just play two tight ends and take one of them out...Love this team but i can't think of any other NFL team fans that have had so many close games blown at the end this year...

And i hope nobody blames Cundiff. Sure he missed an easy kick but no excuse to have to settle for 6 field goals.

"If I lose an employee through attrition, I will not replace him. You can't afford to do it."

"But the reality is that after a big dose of spending in the stimulus bill, no more than 100,000 or so jobs have been created, economists say, and the prospects are for only modest growth in alternative energy jobs for years to come."

"Green-energy industries other than wind and hydropower remain mostly in the experimental stages and are not proven enough technologically or economically to be instrumental in pulling the economy out of recession and putting millions of people to work like the Internet boom of the 1990s or the housing boom of the early 2000s, he said. "

"We need to put 7.3 million people back to work, and none of these ideas can make a dent of more than a few hundred thousand at best, and then after only a long gestation time,"
