The English football season kicked-off today with a full program of games from all the leagues, other than the Premiership which starts next Saturday, as usual a week later. The relegated teams from last seasons Premiership had mixed fortunes, Blackpool won, Birmingham lost and West Ham play tomorrow. While the three teams promoted from the first division, Brighton, Southhampton and Peterborough all picked up wins on their first outing.
    Todays results.

I was unaware that the EPL kicked off last... thanks!

Side note: You mention relegation & promotion. Some American college football writers (principally at CNNSI) have been tossing around the idea of four 16-team "super conferences" in US college football with relegation/promotion elements. Won't happen any time soon, but the FA arrangement was cited in the discussions.

Love what Liverpool did in the offseason. I like that they spent their money on good young talent. They are headed back to the top 3 or 4... Hopefully they can challenge Man U.

Default Welcome to the NFL !

Queens Park Rangers 0-4 Bolton Wanderers
Queens Park Rangers' return to the Premier League ended in misery with a 4-0 defeat to Bolton Wanderers at Loftus Road.

Default What's up with with Arsenal?

    Yesterday: Manchester United 8-2 Arsenal

So after three matches Man Utd sits atop the EPL table with 9 points and a GD of +10. Nothing particularly new there.

But Arsenal... after three matches has one draw and two losses (1 point), a GD of -8 (2 for, 10 against), and sits in 17th place!

What's up with with Arsenal? Are they really that bad?

Watch out for Man City, also with 9 points from 3 games and a goal difference of +9 just one less than Man U. They beat Tottenham 1-5 away on the same day. More importantly, they apparantly have a limitless budget for new players if they want them.

Three games in is always too early to evaluate, there are always weird early results. However, I agree that Arsenal do look to be very shakey at the moment.

Arsenall will be okay. Their first opponents were @NewCastle (draw), Liverpool (loss), @Manchester United (8-2 smear). They've also had to play two UEFA qualifying games against Udinese, winning both legs.

Once they play the bottom feeders, Arsenal will be the top half of the table.

Bottom line is unless Wilshere can take the next step as creative force in the midfield, Arsenal will struggle all year long. They are short on holding midfielders and fullbacks as well.

Man City won't maintain their status for long, I predict in five years, they are just like Leeds United or Birmingham.

BTW - I'm a Leeds fan and even though they are in 2nd tier English football, still the most hated in the entire United Kingdom.

Possibly, but somehow I doubt it. I remember watching Man U play in the old second division in 73/74 . Arsenal have never been out of the top flight since they were promoted to it in 1919. It's a funny ol game, eh?

I'm a Crystal Palace fan, and next up for them is Leeds Utd. I think that you will find that the most hated tem in the UK is Man Utd, although they are also the best loved. Leeds deservedly got their bad reputation for their paricularly aggressive and brusing style of play in the 1970's, they got results but they were shyte to watch, unless you were a Leeds fans, that is.

Yea, along with their fan base, especially in the mid 80s, they really seemed to be a nasty bunch, probably ticked off from being in the 2nd division at the time. Coal miner's strike even made them more insane. Went to a few games on Elland Road while I was stationed at the No Such Agency station near Harrogate.

Still Palace through and through, like a stick of Brighton Rock Byng , although I now live only 10 minutes away from the new Brighton stadium, by car that is, I used to be just a 10 minute walk away from the old one.

Been a month, but Man City and Man Utd are dominating the premier league this year. Arsenal still the bottom half of the table but no way they drop to the bottom 3.

Leeds keep chugging along, not playing good, but are only 3 points out of 6th (playoff spot) with a one less game played.

There are 6 teams within 3 points of the playoffs, my team, Crystal Palace, is one of them.

It's good to see the Shrimpers doing so well but I'm rooting for AFC Wimbledon in that division, Crawley Town is just 25 miles up the road and should also receive some of my attention, and I have always had a soft spot for that old team (that I always remember the name of from the days of the footie results on the radio at 5pm Saturdays)... Accrington Stanley.
