    Talking Let's Play Statues......

Tired of the MJ threads, or has your fuse spluttered from the Fourth?
Let's play Statues. (N-o-o, not the one where you dislocate someone's shoulder slinging them around.)

Let's post a picture of a statue with a hint or two and see who can guess who it is and why they were immortalized. The person who correctly answers then posts their pict.

This is a pict of one of my favorite statues in Ireland. This person was an Irish immigrant to the US and the statue should give you the rest of the story....

Correctamundo!! The statue is in Liscannor and sits so low that I wonder if any of the tons of tourists going past on the buses to the Cliffs of Moher even notice he and his submarine are there. Your turn.....

    Ok.

One of my all-time heroes. He wasn't a lover; he was a fighter! Especially once he got started.

The Holland Tunnel is named after Clifford Milburn Holland, its chief engineer.

I like my theory better- of course, I had originally heard it from an Irish man.

OK, I looked at the statue and thought of John Paul Jones. Am I even slightly warm?

    Bingo!

JPJ is correct. "I have not yet begun to fight!"

This one is by far my favourite statue ever. When you touch the people of different ages you can feel the difference in carving. The young are more supple and the elderly feel frail and more skin and bone.

I know I'm playing the game wrong.. just wanted to share

Sharings good, I just don't have a clue what it represents or where it is. Is it a Holocaust memorial?

No it's more of an installation piece celebrating all the stages of life. If you look up more pictures, the monolitten is surrounded by people of various stages of life.

The monolitten itself has the dead at the bottom and then the elders and as the statue progresses upwards the people get younger. At the very top they are holding the infants towards the sky. Holding them up, Simba fashion, its very beautiful.

Sounds really lovely, I'll have to find some picts that give me more detail. (When I attempt to enlarge the photo, the detail disappears with my photo package.) Thanks for sharing!

I'm going to go ahead and post an athlete also (just to even MM and myself).

He was chestnut and his nickname was Big Red:

I must confess, I have always wanted to visit the nations that make up Scandinavia, from Iceland through Finland. I love Nordic scenery and I've always been fascinated by the Vikings.

    Here's one:

It's local and in my opinion awful because the perspective and scale is odd. This picture actually makes it look better than it looks IRL.
