Clue #8- Critical comments our man wrote in his memoirs about General Lee's wartime performance, made him anathema to many of his former Confederate colleagues. He has only regained some of his credibility in the late 20th century. A prime example is the delay in erecting a statue in his honor on "sacred ground" until 1998.

That's our man's tomb! Obviously the ones who buried him didn't believe in the "old soldier's never die, they just fade away" motto.

Clue #2- He "visited" Westminster (Maryland, not Abbey) in his travels.

Clue #6- Lee was appointed superintendent of the Academy in 1852, and our man became friends with the Lee family before graduating in 1854. He was one of eight cadets designated as honorary "cavalry officers" for his skills in horsemanship, graduating 13th in his class of 46 and ranking tenth in his class in cavalry tactics.

Clue #7- That may have been because our man encountered Sherman's troops at an abandoned inn named Yellow Tavern.
