ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – The national government will be freezing the hiring of workers next year due to the huge budget deficit, Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said. But Abad, who was here during the weekend for the Regional Coordination Meeting of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), said it will not be a total freeze hiring.“There will be no hiring (next year) for government employees, except for teachers, nurses, and Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines employees,” Abad told newsmen at Lantaka Hotel here.

The government’s P325-billion budget deficit has also affected infrastructure projects, except those that are in partnership with the private sector. He said the acquisition of new vehicles by local governmentswill also be frozen to reduce the budget deficit.Abad said the government’s effort to judiciously manage expenditures has somehow kept the deficit level below target.
