Default The end of an era - All My Children & One Life to Live - CANCELLED

    Yahoo! News/AP

NEW YORK – ABC canceled two of its three soap operas on Thursday, consigning "One Life to Live" and "All My Children" — and Susan Lucci, daytime's most famous actress — to television history.

The move leaves "General Hospital" as ABC's only daytime drama, one of only four that will remain on ABC, CBS and NBC's daytime schedule.

And the mind-numbing grip of "reality TV" tightens.

Susan Lucci could very well go on the anchor a nighttime drama, if she chose.

Reality TV is more real than soap. I remember the Edge of Night-that was a real classic soap more a crime drama than about sex. Guilding Light was like that until the mid 1980's.

That's definitely debatable... but I think beside the point. Soap isn't intended to be 'real' - it's drama, and everyone understands that. TV shows with actual actors trying to tell a story are increasingly rare today, and that's a shame because what we're left with is the MTV (empty-V) model.

Only a matter of time before they are all history.

Maybe - those shows have a VERY deep fan base. Guiding Light went 80+ years and pre-dated TV (was on the radio), which really defies conventional wisdom about how TV works.

Soap Operas are a relic of the days
    when your television viewing was
    COMPLETELY controlled by corporate
    interests.

Scripted reality shows have not taken
the place of soap operas as earlier
    surmised. Modern technology
coupled with the less utilized term
of housewife has rendered the soaps
    passe.

College students, who are touted as
faithful viewers, will have to find
    something else to occupy their
    "veg out" time.

Actually, I gather these two are going to get replaced by a cooking show called "The Chew" and a health show. The thing is, all modern technology has done is changed the time that people watch things, not viewership. I think ABC is going to find this is a mistake - too many people who don't watch during the day have these shows tucked away on their DVR for later.
