Johnson has never been a joke. Whenever he's played, he's done well - it's been keeping him on the field that has been the problem.
The same challenge will be for the O's this year.
Keeping him at DH should help.

His injuries kept him from playing in 2007 and 2011 and played in only 38 games in 2008 and only 24 games in 2010.

Nice guy, apparently. And pretty good player offensively and defensively, when healthy.
But how does a 33 year old journeyman 1B/DH help the Orioles rebuild and become a competitive team?

Wilson Betemit and Nick Johnson, pick one, not both, for the 25th man on a team in a NL pennant race

Wow! Is that you Buck? Or is it somebody that thinks/dreams they could do the job better than you!

Betemit was going to be on the team already.
The O's made a commitment to him - whether or not he adds any real value. I don't think he does.
Johnson, on the other hand, does a lot to help the O's biggest weakness, which is to work the pitch count and take walks.

If you're saying "why didn't the O's sign Fielder instead"...join the club.
The O's need a lot more than Fielder to become valuable.

Oh....I will. I always enjoy a good laugh.....and it looks like I will get one 162 times a year courtesy of the team from the 'gem' of MLB stadiums (freshly rennovated no less! )

Vlad, the Latino future Hall of Famer, has a .931 career OPS and Vlad is hardly ever too injured to show up and play.

Selective statistical quotation gets you nowhere.

Last year, he had a .733 OPS, and two out of the last 3 years his OPS was below .800.
    NO ONE ELSE SIGNED HIM!

Get over it, or hire him on as your personal baseball game buddy, since you have the money - apparently.

But, but, but, Hector could do a much better job than Buck Showalter! He said so in an earlier post.

anyone who didn't see that coming is either not paying attention each year, or they just didn't want to see it. this is how the O's operate. they sign a player for reason A (in this case, to be a minor league depth addition). Then they casually shift that player to reason B (a starting position with the big club).

the most well known example of this practice was when they brought Raffy back. he was supposed to be a p/t DH. but as the off season wore on, he morphed into the starting 1Bman.

"Selective statistical quotation" indeed. Let's look at Nick's production the last three years:

2011 - Produced nothing since he didn't play a single game.
2010 - Played a grand total of 24 games with an OPS of .693.
    2009 - Played a grand total of 35 games.

The O's BS is a mere shadow of his former self who did a very poor job last year. I suspect half the posters on this board could have won as many games as BS did last year.

but he's getting paid a salary that's in line with his production. that's the difference. if VG was willing to sign a MiL contract and play for league min., he may still be in MLB.

neither player is going to help a competitive team.

generally, MLB is made up of 3 types of teams. Competitive (neither player will find an offer from this catagory), Rebuilding (these teams don't want diminished players in the twilight of their career), or perennial losers (this is a short list of teams, but the O's are on it). In the case of baltimore, they found a less expensive player to satisfy what they're looking for.
