Losing top defenseman Mike Green for almost this entire season and then losing leading scorer Nicklas Backstrom to a concussion really hurts.

Add their other two star players in Ovechkin and Semin's sub-par seasons and it's easy to see why the team has struggled.

Veteran Mike Knuble (an atrocious -14 and a lousy 3 goals) has struggled all season and I look for him to either move to another team or continue to be a healthy scratch.

Green is supposed to be back in 2-3 weeks. That will really help.
Now to get Ovie motivated a little more. Ever since they made him the team captain his production has gone downhill.

It's very disapointing to see my favorite team struggling like this. But I'm not going to crap on them.
A positive step in beating first place Florida on the road last night. The Caps have a real shot to win the division and the 3rd seed in the playoffs. Hopefully Backstrom will be back by then.

    a couple of things Think...

Ovies production has fallen off since being named captain. IMO, it has nothing to do with his play. He still looks plenty motivated to me. Plays hard every night. I'm not sure what the reason for his stats falling off. Maybe the team around him ?? Seems to me on many of his shifts he's stuck in our defensive zone.
Would you happen to know or know where to look for that stat ?

Will Green be 100% when he comes back ? I like Mike Green but he seems to be very injury prone. Might want to get use to the idea of not having him around a lot.

Backstroms injury really hurts....no doubt about that. He's the catalyst on this team. He's the the one that sets it all up.

Our goaltenders have played poorly. Our defense looks pathetic at times. Hence the lack of goals this team puts up.

No more enforcers on the team.....that get pushed around a lot.
This would have never happened under Alan Mays watch...

As for crapping on them....I will admit I'm a poor sport. Always have always will be. Turned 50 yesterday and I'm still a poor sport. Guess it's who I am.
I want my teams to win....

I never thought I would say this but I think Hunter should give Neuvirth his job back. Watch him play tonight vs. montreal. I'm going to the game tonight and I want to see him in there.
Vokoun has been a major disappointment.

Speaking of Hunter - does it bother you that he lied to the media tellling the press after the Ottawa game that Ovechkin had "an equipment problem?"
The coaching change has not worked.
    See:
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports...dWR_story.html

    Excerpt:

Coach Dale Hunter, who replaced Boudreau, apparently hasn’t communicated well with some of his players. Also, Hunter has been highly critical of goaltender Tomas Vokoun, another offseason acquisition, so the Capitals have significant off-ice issues, as well.
Hunter "hasn't communicated well with some of his players?"
Say it ain't so! Wasn't that the reason why Boudreau was replaced? And since when do you fingerpoint players out to the press like he did to Vokoun after the Ottawa loss?
A couple of weeks ago I saw one of the assistant coaches drawing up a play with less than a minute left in the game while Hunter just watched. I have seen hundreds of NHL games and I do not recall ever seeing that before.

If he can't get them into the playoffs he must go. And if that happens GMGM needs to go as well.

Back to Ovechkin - I mentioned quite some time ago that I had a concern that he was partying way too much and doing too much womanizing. Remember how I was blasted for that?

He has lost a couple of steps, there is no question about that. He's still a good player but many NHL stars have passed him on the talent level. I never expected that. He needs to own up and look himself in the mirror but I'm thinknig that maybe he can't do it anymore. I'll add that he is a horrible team captain. The "C" should have been given to Laich or Chimera. This reminds me of the Jagr debacle only Ovechkin is doing worse while making a whole lot more money and hardly no one is talking about it.

Caps are a mess. GMGM should have traded Semin,Knuble,Hamrlik,Vokoun,Wideman and Schultz at the deadline. Thankfully the Caps have plenty of cap space in the summer with Semin,Vokoun,Wideman,Halpern and King UFA and the expected addition of Kuznetsov. Hopefully they can take the 6.7 mil of Semin and sign Parise or some other big time forward and maybe package Holtby,Eakin and one of their 1st rd picks for a scoring winger or D-man.

We'd be better off at this point missing the playoffs so we could have 2 top 15 picks and maybe the embarrassment will cost McPhee his job.

McPhee has to go for starters. Nobody on this team should be untouchable and they should actively be looking to move Green and Semin, despite all the whining the fans might do.

I THINK we are all in agreement when it comes to GMGM being dismissed.

I'm up in the air when it comes to missing the playoffs for high draft picks.

Because you never know once you get in. The Caps do have a team with playoff experience.

And from the other side....not all high draft picks pan out.

Looks like we won't get our wish. Barring a collapse this team will make the playoffs and GMGM will save his job. Nuts.

4 straight....keep it going. If ernie grunfeld still has his job, it's going to take alot more for teddy boy to fire GMGM.

    another head scratcher

trailing not once but twice in the game by 3 goals the Caps came back to win 5-4 in the OT shootout over the Isles

    Ovie is back
2 goals and a sick move in the shootout to score also

Matt Hendricks goal in the shootout was in a word " outstanding"

I love that kick the one leg back move, he should be in the shootout everytime, I've seen him make the goalie look stupid a few times with that move.

Kuznetsov says he's staying in Russia. Major blow unless he's posturing. Caps can only pay him a million due to the rules while they reportedly will pay 5 mil.
