right, but do you think they will?

that's the point I was making. they haven't invested in an impact FA since Tejada. I would be totally shocked if they changed that pattern this year.

hypothetically, if the O's are legitimately in the hunt at the trading deadline and the season reveals that they need a certain type of player (or two) to help ensure that they can push their way into Oct, do you see them investing in the player(s) to make that happen?

and just to help the conversation, the player(s) in question are young, solid, proven talents. the trades are fair for both teams. the fans of both teams agree their team is getting a good deal. both players are willing to sign a long term contract with the O's and the length of their contracts won't outlast their likely productive years as players. all indications suggest that they will vastly improve the quality of the team. but they want market value. They will each sign for $18M/yr even though they will most likely get $20M/yr on the open market.

do you think the O's would make this move and invest in these worthy players?

I think your beastiality analogy is a bit off. It's more accurate to say that Peter A taught the Oriole bird to soar straight to the top of the AL East and into the playoffs.

you're right again. I don't actually have any first hand proof that Peter talks off buffalos. so I formally retract that comment.

You're a good and honest man, weird-O. While we know nothing about PA's relationship with buffalo, we have first hand knowledge from this year that he can teach a bird to soar.

We also have 14 previous years that illustrate that he can teach a bird to lay down, die, and rot in the ground before the summer months have even finished up.

I don't know. Past behavior would indicate no. But then again, the team has never really been competitive at the trading deadline.

that's true, the nearest similarity was in 2005 around the AS break just after Bedard went down to yet another injury.

Peter is blameless. He hired a bunch of so-called baseball people who took his money and delivered nothing in return.

Of course. Angelos is as competitive as Steinbrenner was, he just hired the wrong people.

The asbestos people can testify to PA's competitiveness. As for baseball, competiveness doesn't correlate with max payrolls as the overpaid stiffs in Boston and New York are proving this year and as Tampa and now the O's are also proving.

Maybe not, but NY has 4 championships and Boston has 2 during the Orioles' 14 losing seasons. And they are in the playoffs most years. Seems pretty competitive to me.
