You have to admit when a politician makes gas prices a part of his campaign only to see even higher prices during his time in office there is a certain amount of failure and hypocrisy taking place.

Since I owned a full service Crown station in the late 70's..I am pretty sure I know how prices are set...

Back then, I remember the price wars..Everybody pays the same for the gas, for the most part, but you are correct, there is not all that much money made on gas..At least back then it wasn't...Back then, we would ride up and down and check competitors prices, we would lower ( as would they ) our price to beat theirs...They would lower theirs and so on..Each time it was lowered, obviously the profit margin decreased...

Today when a station is selling regular gas and 2 miles away the same brand is 20 cents per gallon higher, that owner is making a much larger profit..Now I also now that there is no comparasion to the numbers of gallons sold..The higher priced station is nearly always empty while the lower priced one has cars in it all the time...

The higher price owner may also be getting charged an extra 20 cents by the dealer he's in a contract with to purchase gas from.

Prices go up when the economy is growing and come down when it is slowing. There's little that any President can do about that anytime soon...
