Hagins Signs with Mercer Women’s Basketball

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's basketball coaching staff picked up its third commitment of the 2012 signing class on Wednesday, inking Domonique Hagins of South River High School in Edgewater, Maryland to a National Letter of Intent.
Hagins joins Jessica Prieto (Laredo, Texas) and Kate Alemann (Auckland, New Zealand) as the newest members of the program, set for arrival in Macon in the fall of 2012.
Mercer's most recent acquisition was a four-year varsity point guard at South River under guidance of head coach Mike Zivic, helping the team rise as high as a No. 7 ranking in the Baltimore Sun Team Poll. With Hagins at the point, the team took regional runner-up honors in both her junior and senior seasons.
Her final year at South River marked her most productive campaign, as she finished the year with averages of 13.6 points, four rebounds, six assists and three steals per game.
Hagins' standout career saw her take one Baltimore Sun Player of the Week award, four all-county recognitions and an All-Metro second team nod in her senior season. She also drew attention from the Washington Post, earning an All-Metro Honorable Mention.
Her career also included four state championships and a fourth place finish at D1 Nationals as a member of the Maryland Lady Shooting Stars AAU team, headed by Johnny Mack.

Getting lots of tweets (hoopgurlz, mike Flynn, lboogie) about the Nike Skills Camp in Richmond. Are any of the BMore girls getting invites. I know 3 all metro kids who had no idea it was even going on. Who chooses these girls, and what is the process. Just seems to me that, unless you play for certain teams, you're left out. If anyone has some clout, can we get some BMore girls invites.

Benefactor there where several Baltimore area girls there, Brionna Jones, Jannah Tucker, Taylor Murray, Cyndi Cole. I can't tell you who selected them, I believe most were invited based on affiliation with Nike teams, but I did hear of a few who were there who was not. I asked myself the same question I was looking for a few more baltimore girls who I know was better than many of the girls I saw. It doesn't matter much really though the media there are only going to write about a select few who they chose to anyway. Thats why I went this year to witness myself. So I could really see who played well and who they decided to write about.

I agree with you benefactor. Bre Bolden probably the most underated player in 2013 and the best player on the maryland addidas team should have gotten a look. The kid is a 5'10 athletic guard.

Agree on Bre. They missed her relentless energy this weekend and last. That being said, they still took care of business with DaDa, Diona, and Big Infiniti leading the way. Trailed by 12 in championship early and won by 10-12.

As good as Bre is, Diona White as a freshman may turn out to be the best player in the area in a couple years. Remember, she's just a freshman.

The players are select by Nike corporate grassroots staff based on recommendations of scouts, evaluators, and Nike college coaches. Players must appear on several list to be considered, this is to avoid anyone claiming that they were solely responsible for getting a player invited. There were plenty of girls from the Baltimore area invited, King, Alston and Harrison were invited and choose not to attend. The players from the area who did attend Jones, Cole, Murray, Tucker all did very well.

There were plenty of good players that were not nominated from several areas in the country, it happens. As as players from Baltimore that weren't invited it probably has to due with the fact that do not play in major tournaments outside of the area.

Is the Murray you mentioned Q Murray? If so, I heard she didn't get an invite.
And 4 of those seven girls play for the same team- Belles. And I know kids are going to get left off the "invite list" but there are deserving kids that don't play on one of these three big name super- teams.

And I will admit my ignorance about these skills camps. I stupidly thought that they were designed around bringing in kids that really needed and would benefit from high level skill coaching, not the ones who are already verballed or receiving multiple offers. I didn't know they were so exclusive of kids that haven't for whatever reason haven't been seen by the selectors. Thanks for the info Sun.

No Q Murray was not invited. Nike is not in the business of running camps, they sell athletic gear and nurturing the grassroots level is all part of building their next customer base. There are plenty of opportunities for players to work with trainers from NSA in other events or individually. I believe Nadine Domond is doing a camp in Baltimore at the end of July.

Here's a challenge for those in the know-

If you were an AAU coach of a 16u or 17u team, and you wanted your girls to get maximum competition and exposure, what would your summer tournament schedule look like?

What camps would your girls attend?

Keep it realistic for a DMV player.

What tourneys would you hit, and which ones would you skip?

BEST OF MARYLAND TOURNAMENT JULY 26-28.

For camps look at schools you are good enough to play at. Maryland has an elite camp that brings out very good competition> not everyone can play there even if you are an acc recruit there is a huge difference between bc or pitt compared to top of the line acc maryland, duke.
