    Default Rutgers student convicted

Should there be any accountability here or is it really just an immature 18 yrs old's action that led to the suicide of his roomate and should not be punished?

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/s...,7399838.story

Personally while it may not have been a hate crime - it was a crime and it did lead to his roomate's suicide. I think Ravi should be deported back to India permanently - as his punishment. He's not a citizen and if he is guilty of any o f the charges should be deported.

If what I'm hearing is true it's sounding more and more like a dumb arse 18 y/o kid's actions turned out tragically. I don't think the kid ought to be deported. The kid was about to apologize for goodness sakes. I honestly don't think kids that age who are straight have any idea what it feels like to be that age and gay or questioning and feel like you're unable to say anything to anyone. What he did is the kind of thing a straight guy would do to another straight guy and think nothing of it

"The following evening Clementi updated hisFacebook status to say he was jumping off the George Washington Bridge around the same time Ravi was composing a series of apologetic text messages to Clementi."

Maybe what you say is true, but if the Jury finds him guilty I still think he sould be deported. Someone has to pay for this death. If he is guilty of any of the charges per the Jury, then he should be deported. I can't see him spending 10 yrs in prison so lets be merciful of deport the kid.

Honestly he shouldn't get prison time or deported and I don't think they will find him guilty. This wasn't a hate crime in any sense of the word. It was a prank. A prank that 99.9 times out of 100 ends up in all parties involved laughing about it over a beer. This time it turned out tragically and there's no way anyone could have known Clementi would have reacted the way he did. And quite frankly that kind of harsh reaction on the part of Clementi indicates to me that perhaps there was more going on inside Clementi's head than any of us will ever truly know.

I wouldn't expect fairness if I were you. Many times the American justice system is neither just or fair. (or is it nor fair?) Anyway, he may not deserve to be found guilty but don't hold your breath.

Default Verdict in Rutgers webcam spying trial

    http://www.ajc.com/news/nation-world...n-1385604.html

Twenty-year-old Dharun Ravi (dah-ROON' RAH'-vee) faces 15 criminal charges, including invasion of privacy and bias intimidation, a hate crime.

His freshman-year roommate, Tyler Clementi, jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in September 2010, just days after Clementi's intimate encounter with another man.

The jury has deliberated for about 9 1/2 hours without reaching a verdict. They didn't have any questions for the judge Thursday.

    They're scheduled to resume Friday.
I think at the very least he's guilty of invasion of privacy. A conviction on any of the charges means IHO that he should be deported to India. He's not a citizen, we don't need his kind here.

Hopefully we'll have a verdict on Friday. Guilty.

I suspect invasion of privacy and tampering with evidence (deleting the tweets) they will nail him on. However, the one problem with hate crime laws is that if you lose in court, you risk losing the entire case. Let's say that he was having sex with a woman but all the other facts remained the same, would this be a hate crime? Doubtful.

Given the invasion of privacy in a shared dormitory room?

Hate crime law is the wishful thinking of the judiciary.

The rights to protect property considering the use of a camera is a valid excuse. It's a security measure.

The judicial system in this country is more and more becoming a joke.

I'm curious will there be outrage of the possibliity of deportation for Ravi, or because he's a legal immigrant, you dont' care?

This poor shnook really hit the trifecta. 1. "Bullying" is the offense du jour, and embarrassing someone on Facebook for some reason is considered "bullying." 2. Gays are the current protected victim group, and crossing that demographic opens one to the full weight of the witch hunt. 3. Hate crime is just a totally stupid, illogical, and unfair charge thrown as a bone to the forces of political correctness. What he did was wrong, and the fact that the victim took his life as a result is staggering, but this young man has been totally swept away by the tides of culture out of all proportion to his action.

About the only group that the left cares about getting bullied are homosexuals. No doubt they'll make bullying a crime, but it will get more punishment if the target is gay, not because the target has red hair, or is dorky, or whatever...

If Celementi had been mentally balanced, there'd be no suicide, no criminal charges, and at most some school disciplinary proceedings. So this all was determined due to clementi's irrational response.

By this logic, if christians start killing themselves over legalized gay marriage, will liberals start getting charged with hate crimes?

You miss the point entirely, of course. Your comparison completely fails.
The only way your comparison works is if some liberal placed a hidden camera in the home of the Christians and broadcast private discussions during sexual relations about how sick and immoral gay marriage is and this was broadcast to the whole world on facebook. And in their humiliation the christian couple committed suicide.

A former Rutgers University student was found guilty Friday of invasion of privacy and the hate crime of bias intimidation for using a webcam to spy on his roommate's tryst with another man before the roommate's suicide.

Dharun Ravi, 20, sat expressionless as the guilty verdicts were read in the Middlesex County, N.J., courtroom. He also was found not guilty of some lesser counts.
Ravi could get up to 10 years in prison, by some estimates -- and could be deported to his native India, even though he has lived legally in the U.S. since he was a little boy.

[Stupid fool rejected plea deal.] Before the trial, Ravi and his lawyers had rejected a plea bargain that would have spared him from prison. He would have gotten probation and 600 hours of community service and would have been given help in avoiding deportation
