He was a supporter of one player who is graduating in 2 months, but not the program or Davis the least. As for me, well, I am a big supporter or both, aka CHC/Davis homer.
Yes, people are considering this year down compared to 2010, 2011 seasons and the potential in 2013 and 2014. Personally, I think they will be a playoff team and project to finish 2nd again and I think the OL will be considerably than last year, but it will take a few games to gel. I would call this upcoming season a "transition" season. Most seasons in HS sports are transition seasons, but the 2012 Calvert Hall football team will be going through a greater transition than most, if not all MIAA teams. The starters (and contributing players) lost from both teams is not even close to comparable to Dunbar. The only two teams in the state more talented on paper going into the 2012 season are Good Counsel and Gilman. The 2012 Dunbar team could end up being their most talented team ever. CHC loses many, many more starter on both sides of the ball than Dunbar and they lose 28 seniors total. The varsity experience gap in this game will be huge but talent is there at CHC. 85 Knight, you are correct, the program itself is in much better shape than it was 3 years ago. CHC is now in a position to compete year in and year out. Overcoming the loss of 28 seniors, including 15 starters is not something that happens over night. 16 starters if you count another player who would be a 3rd year defensive starter in 2012, but he was dismissed from the school.
Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of talent at CHC, but they will have new starters playing upwards of 15 out of 22 starting positions. New QB Colar Kuhns (Thomas Stuart's understudy) is a very smart kid (4.0 gpa) who has all of the tools to play D1 football. How quickly he develops a rapport with the group of very good WR's and RB's, including a transfer RB and possibly a freshman or 2 WR/TE will go a long way in determining the outcome of this game. Colar won the Underclassmen MVP at Rivals 5 star camp over Dunbar's QB and many others from NY to North Carolina. He also won underclassmen QB MVP at IMG Madden Camp in Florida in January. Colar might have the best arm in the area this season. Maybe the Dunbar game is going to be his coming out party, but you never know until they play the game 5 months from now. The real challenge early will be the amount of new players moving up from JV and or playing their 1st game on the big stage without previous varsity experience. The leadership vacuum is an annual dilemma in HS footbal. However, some coaches can coach 20 years without losing 28 seniors in one class. It's quite a transition but I think they will be fine there too.
I am pretty sure the "down year" comment is subjective based on a few variables. The person who made that comment has been very critical of Davis on this board in the past. It also evolved from a few things that transpired off the field. They wouldn't touch CHC with a 10 ft pole (scrimmage or game) the past two years. There has already been plenty of smack talk among a group of a handful or two friends that work out together in the off season. However, GA is correct. There is not much love lost among some of the the adults. I really hope they did not take it personally when their best player applied to CHC two years ago. I know the CHC staff didn't take it personally when four seniors transferred to Dunbar for their senior year. Every one of those kids stood behind the CHC bench in '09 at Gilman and cheered on their former team while their coaches were behind the Gilman bench. They were welcome back on CHC campus to visit and a couple of them still work out at CHC in the summer and attend CHC football games. I would have hoped the Dunbar coaches felt the same when their best player applied to CHC two years ago, but the word is they did not.
