Looks like McDonogh is making moves
Yes sir, that is him. I think his brother quit football to focus on baseball after the '09 season. I am not sure if it's 100% done, but that is the word. I was shocked when I heard he was going to leave for McDonogh. It looks like McDonogh is becoming known for making these late March/April pushes over the past few years. They wait for everything to quiet down and bust out the loot. LOL. They also have an OLB coming in from Hamilton who I thought was a done deal to CHC a few months ago. They offered him a full academic scholarship and that was that. He is a very good kid and his father is good people too. He is going to be a heck of a player too. Other than those two kids, I really do not know about McDonogh's incoming class. It's definitely not like last year's class.

The RB coming to CHC will be a JR (2014). He played in the city league and was just as good as the Dunbar RB's in his class. However, his team was not. He is a good student who was also accepted to Loyola and MSJ. There might be on or two more, but the RB is the only one confirmed for now.

I understand it brought some emotions to the surface concerning city league vs. the MIAA. The person who made that post is not a CHC or Davis fan. He was a supporter of one player who is graduating in 2 months, but not the program or Davis the least. As for me, well, I am a big supporter or both, aka CHC/Davis homer.

Yes, people are considering this year down compared to 2010, 2011 seasons and the potential in 2013 and 2014. Personally, I think they will be a playoff team and project to finish 2nd again and I think the OL will be considerably than last year, but it will take a few games to gel. I would call this upcoming season a "transition" season. Most seasons in HS sports are transition seasons, but the 2012 Calvert Hall football team will be going through a greater transition than most, if not all MIAA teams. The starters (and contributing players) lost from both teams is not even close to comparable to Dunbar. The only two teams in the state more talented on paper going into the 2012 season are Good Counsel and Gilman. The 2012 Dunbar team could end up being their most talented team ever. CHC loses many, many more starter on both sides of the ball than Dunbar and they lose 28 seniors total. The varsity experience gap in this game will be huge but talent is there at CHC. 85 Knight, you are correct, the program itself is in much better shape than it was 3 years ago. CHC is now in a position to compete year in and year out. Overcoming the loss of 28 seniors, including 15 starters is not something that happens over night. 16 starters if you count another player who would be a 3rd year defensive starter in 2012, but he was dismissed from the school.

Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of talent at CHC, but they will have new starters playing upwards of 15 out of 22 starting positions. New QB Colar Kuhns (Thomas Stuart's understudy) is a very smart kid (4.0 gpa) who has all of the tools to play D1 football. How quickly he develops a rapport with the group of very good WR's and RB's, including a transfer RB and possibly a freshman or 2 WR/TE will go a long way in determining the outcome of this game. Colar won the Underclassmen MVP at Rivals 5 star camp over Dunbar's QB and many others from NY to North Carolina. He also won underclassmen QB MVP at IMG Madden Camp in Florida in January. Colar might have the best arm in the area this season. Maybe the Dunbar game is going to be his coming out party, but you never know until they play the game 5 months from now. The real challenge early will be the amount of new players moving up from JV and or playing their 1st game on the big stage without previous varsity experience. The leadership vacuum is an annual dilemma in HS footbal. However, some coaches can coach 20 years without losing 28 seniors in one class. It's quite a transition but I think they will be fine there too.

I am pretty sure the "down year" comment is subjective based on a few variables. The person who made that comment has been very critical of Davis on this board in the past. It also evolved from a few things that transpired off the field. They wouldn't touch CHC with a 10 ft pole (scrimmage or game) the past two years. There has already been plenty of smack talk among a group of a handful or two friends that work out together in the off season. However, GA is correct. There is not much love lost among some of the the adults. I really hope they did not take it personally when their best player applied to CHC two years ago. I know the CHC staff didn't take it personally when four seniors transferred to Dunbar for their senior year. Every one of those kids stood behind the CHC bench in '09 at Gilman and cheered on their former team while their coaches were behind the Gilman bench. They were welcome back on CHC campus to visit and a couple of them still work out at CHC in the summer and attend CHC football games. I would have hoped the Dunbar coaches felt the same when their best player applied to CHC two years ago, but the word is they did not.
I know the coaches at CHC are very high on Kuhns and have high expectation for him being able to step in and take over the offense. I also believe they are confident they have returning players at RB, Rec. and on the line who are ready and able to take on a larger role this year.

Those who believe Calvert Hall will be down this year may discover that is not the case. Depending on one's point of view, that discovery will be good or bad.

McDonogh got one of GORCs best players. If Montgomery goes there, they will be tough to beat in 2013. Let's see if they beef up their schedule.

My laptops dead so I will update the rest of the games when it gets back from service next week but I do have 1 very interesting addition:

9/8 McDonogh vs. St Peter's Prep (NJ) 1:30 (Patriot Classic, Navy-Marine Corps Stadium)

SPP had a 2013 CB (Tre Bell) committed to Florida. This game definitely looks like a step up schedule-wise for McD.

This is beyond a step up! This is a HUGE step up. SPP is the third best team behind Bosco and Bergen Catholic in the state of NJ! They are legit.

McDonogh is trying to make moves! They will be really tough next year. They are getting two very good Gilman kids this year. One who I think will be the star of McDonogh's team. The other will be a freshman that I think will be a star! Your LB crew in the future will be stack, with the Gilman 8th grader and your super frosh Wyatt Cook.

McD has really stepped it up in the last few weeks. It was looking like it was going to be a light recruiting class until they started getting all of these kids at the 11th hour.

I think Dom is starting to realize that they need to step up the scheduling to keep getting these stellar recruits. SPP is a huge step and I hope it will become the norm for McD scheduling going forward. Other than the Landon game, which is a nice fairly local non-conference rivalry, I wouldn't be sad to see any other teams that McD has played recently gone from the non-conference schedules and replaced by more of the SPP-type schools.

The crazy thing about Wyatt is that he's almost a lock to be a BCS quality recruit, but he's probably a better wrestler. I would not be surprised to see him as maybe the best wrestler in McD history when all is said and done. Having the bus network really helped land Wyatt, he's from Carroll County and one of the main selling points for his parents was the bus running from Westminster. I don't know of another school in the country with as wide-spread of a bus network and that will really help get recruits from farther out.

I will be pulling hard for Gilman to beat Don Bosco this fall. A McD/Gilman sweep of SPP/Don Bosco would make a big statement for MD football.

I don't know if McD can pull it off this year, but I'm expecting big things in 2013 and beyond. I said once that the 42-6 loss to Gilman in 2010 was the turning point for a lot of the trustees and shot callers at McD. They are determined to do whatever is necessary to compete with and try to surpass Gilman going forward.

Gilman's bus service goes out to Montgomery County, so that's pretty far as well.

Beating SPP will be tough but I will definitely be rooting for McD. 2013 as I have said before, I have McD as the favorites. Especially with the Gilman kid coming over. Now if you can keep him healthy is another question.

Cook is without question a BCS lock in football. He could go down as the best LB McD has ever had.

2nd game of McD's schedule is now know, the season opener, which is also a neutral site game:

8/30 7:30 pm McDonogh vs. Gonzaga (Byrd Stadium, University of Maryland)

As an aside, when was the last time a HS game was played at Byrd? I know it's pretty rare because UMD doesn't want the grass being torn up. Maryland is playing W&M at home only 2 days later.

I assume Kareem Montgomery (will be a junior) is joining Richardo Liano (incoming freshman) as transfers from Gilman. I know they have the GORC WR coming in and an OLB/ DE (Lacks) from Hamilton. The ladder 2 were looking good for CHC until the end. Dom is very smart. He can offer things that CHC simply cannot to a handful of kids he really wants every year. He got Hawkins away from CHC and Myers away from Gilman in the 11th hour last year. Who else is joining them at McDonogh.

I know they have the QB from Columbia going there as well. They are definitely the kings of pulling the 11th hour move to grab kids! I mean I am not knocking what they are doing. Obviously the alumni have spoken and they are tired of getting smacked down by Gilman.

The crazy thing is, I have heard about kids going to almost every school in the conference except Loyola. Really wonder why Coach Hall is trying to put together over there.

The alums have definitely spoken and have helped remove a lot of the obstacles for getting qualified football players in. They still have to be smart, and still have to test and interview well, but there used to be several members of the admissions committee who were very anti-football and tried their best to find the slightest problem with incoming students who were good football players so they could keep them from being admitted. Those members of the committee have much less say now. You still won't see a ton of football players come in, maybe 5-7 per year instead of 2-3, just because there is a hard cap on grade size (142 I believe) and about 100 kids are already at McD for MS.

The beat down by Gilman in 2010 was the turning point for most alums. The series had been almost all close games recently and the big loss in 2010 brought back a lot of bad memories from the older alums (the ones with the most money too) of the blowout losses that characterized the 60s and 70s. They are determined to never again see a long losing streak like those decades. When those older guys talk, McD listens considering that generation contributed probably 90%+ of the $75 million for Phase 1 of the Campus Master Plan.

On a side note, I hope Anquan Boldin enjoys a long Ravens career and decides to retire in MD, as his son is going into his 3rd year in the McDonogh lower school and I would very much like to see DJ Boldin catching passes for the Eagles varsity in 5 years time.

I don't know what Loyola is doing under Coach Hall either, I don't think a January coaching change helped recruiting though. I did see Coach Abbott officiating the Hopkins-Navy lax game over the weekend.

SPP has a very good program. They were ranked 8th in the state of NJ and 436th nationally last season while finishing 7-4.

They a generally considered the 3rd best program in Jersey. Was actually ranked AHEAD of Bosco two seasons ago in the Pre-Season in most Polls.

I know you will try and make an excuse for why CHC will not be playing a better schedule but these are the sort of games that the Cards need to be playing. No reason McD is playing a game like this and CHC isn't.

Paramus Catholic has been making big moves in Jersey.. Most notably Jabril Peppers (one of the best sophs in the country offers from Florida, South Carolina, Rutgers) transfer from Bosco.. he is one of a few to transfer to Paramus... ECA is playing Paramus Oct 27th at Rutgers... More games to announce soon.. There is an interesting scrimmage Aug 10th ECA vs Good Counsel for those that want to see early action..

Paramus Catholic also the Washington kid from Bosco as well. PC has a Lou of very good skill players but really have nothing on both lines. They are at best the 5th best team in Jersey this year.

I heard about the Bosco scrimmage. Was really hoping for a Gilman-ECA scrimmage.

Paramus JV beat our JV team last year.. They are becoming the choice of Orange kids as it is closer to them and is considered more AA friendly (per Peppers) than Bosco .. anyway should be intersting.. I seriously see an eastern regional super conference in the near future..

just for fun here is the idea

    Good Counsel (Md)
    Gilman (Md)
    Dematha (Md)
    McDonogh (Md)
    ECA (Md)
    FCA (DC)
    Bosco (NJ)
    Bergen (NJ)
    Paramus(NJ)
    St Peters (NJ)
    IMHOTEP (PA)
    Haverford (PA)
    Malvern Prep (PA)

CHC , LOY , St Joes and Spalding would have a serious decision to make...

If you beat a dead horse long enough... Nevermind, it is still a dead horse. I got you "pre season poll 2 yrs ago". You have a funny way of shaping your propaganda. It's called pouncing.

CHC's JV beat Red Lion last year too. I think you are a little of on this one. Haveford, Malvern, DM, Mcdonogh? Really? FCA? No way some of these institutions align with football factories like FCA,ECA, and some others you listed. There will even be a ground swell of opposition from some at Gilman. Trust me, it ain't happening. Not with all of the schools you listed anyway .
