Episcopal (VA)- lots of money too
Woodberry Forest (VA)- best athletic facilities I've every seen, top 5 biggest endowment in the country, biggest per-student endowment in the country ($75,000+ per student at least), full boarding program

Episcopal and Woodberry are as much of rivals as McD-Gilman/Loyola-CHC. They are currently dominating the VA prep school league, which isn't that good. They could step up into a better league and be competitive.
Episcopal is on a whole different level. I went their last summer with some friends whose son was being recruited by them. The locker room is on par with the Gators and Vols I couldn't believe what I was seeing at a high school. Then my buddy showed me the fee's. The first installment for freshman year was 32,000 dollars. I almost choked on my hot dog when told me that. It was also to see T.C. Williams have a major upgrade to.

Woodberry Forest takes it even further. No reason to ever venture down there unless there's a game you want to see there (the school is in the absolute middle of nowhere) though, but it is incredible. Woodberry combines the best features of the facilities at CHC, McD, Episcopal, and Prep into one. The only facility they were lagging behind anybody in is the pool, which McD's is much better than. Woodberry is $45,000 tuition with an endowment of $250 million dollars for only 402 students. McD and Gilman by comparison are under $100 million with more students.

On a side note, congrats to MSJ for beating St. Pauls in lax today 10-6 for their 1st MIAA A win in 3 years. It's nice to see them break through finally. I can't believe how far and how fast St. Pauls has fallen though. If you had told StP fans going into this year that they'd be 3-11, 0-5 in the MIAA A and a loss to Hereford with a -50 goal differential, they'd call you crazy. They end their season with a murders row of teams too: Gilman, BL, McD, CHC

Believe it or not Episcopal in Philly might have even better facilities. They just re-located their entire school from right near St. Joe's University in Philly to the suburbs and put in state of the art facilities for every sport.

Woodbury isn't quite in the top 5 biggest endowments in the US, nor does it have the highest endownment on a per student basis, but it's not far off:

    http://www.boardingschoolreview.com/...owments/sort/1

Either way, Woodbury is a great school. My 2 best friends during my freshman year in college (before I transferred) went there, and I visited on 1 occasion. They're probably consdidered the top boarding school in the south, attract pull kids from VERY wealthy southern families in places like Atlanta and New Orleans.

Also, I though Episcopal played inthe DCIAC, not the VA Prep School League - did they move?

You're right on both accounts. I should have fact-checked a little more.

Episcopal is in the IAC, I just assumed they were in the VAPSL since they played Woodberry last game of the season. Episcopal could definitely be a better football program with the resources they have, they haven't been even .500 often. They do have a new coach this year though, so maybe they are trying to change things.

Woodberry on the other hand has won 8 games (they only play 9) every year since 2008. They played McD in 2009 and 2010, winning by 2 at Woodberry in '09 and losing by 30 to McD in '10. The loss was their only of the season. I remember looking at their roster in 2010 and seeing that they had kids from something like 29 different states, DC, France, and the Ukraine. They had a pretty good RB from Bowie and another MD kid who was mainly a lax player who transferred from one of the MIAA schools (I can't remember which one).

Woodberry's QB had a terrible injury in a scrimmage last season, he was a major BCS recruit but ended up doing something to his leg when he got tackled that required amputation of part of his lower leg. Tim Tebow heard of the story and flew him to see one of the Broncos games.

I've updated the MIAA schedules on page 1, I'll update the rest sometime in the next week.

Interesting to note that Loyola is playing Prep, the only MIAA school (to my knowledge) that is playing Prep this season. Since Prep is playing a highly weakened, mostly local schedule, I wonder if this is an indication that the Loyola program may go the same way as Prep?

    Default Prep- Loyola

I think keeping this game is more a reflection that the two schools are Jesuit, and they want to keep the rivalry. I think ideally they would like to do it in all sports.

Loyola's non-conference schedule has been lackluster for 5 + years now.

Times are changing. Look at this new transfer rule in Cali:

    http://www.maxpreps.com/blogs/maxwir...basketball.htm

Players only have to sit out 30 days after transferring for athletic purposes without moving into the school district you are transferring to, instead of a year or longer.

Florida put in an even more radical rule a couple days ago. There is now no oversight on transfers except from individual school districts. All transfers that are approved are eligible to play immediately, even if they transfer for athletic purposes.

    http://www.maxpreps.com/news/pmjUhUr...nd-coaches.htm

I can't decide if I like this or not, but this is the way hs football is going. The gap between the haves and have-nots is growing and these new transfer rules make it much easier to transfer from have-nots to haves if you are a good player. I think the ultimate end may be a BCS of sorts for the most powerful HS in the country. There will be a few regional super-conferences with the schools that are willing to and have the money to travel and be showcased on the national level. There will be maybe 50-100 of these programs, maybe less, who will get the best recruits and generally be on a different level than 99% of the rest of the HS programs in the country. There will be a tough decision to make for many schools that have the means to make the jump but have good reason not to.

Loyola is putting in turf this summer (finally). The only natural grass fields in the MIAA A will be McD and Gilman, who both have turf fields for other sports.

1st page of schedules now updated. Rest coming later. Bold move by Westminster scheduling Martinsburg (WV): 28-0, 2 time defending WV State Champs in past 2 seasons.

OK, this is the word I received today. There will be quarter finals. semi-finals, and finals in the MIAA A for the 2012 football season. I think the #1 and #2 seed will get a bye in the quarters. The 3rd seed plays 6, & the 4th seed will play the 5th seed in the quarters. The #1 seed will play the lowest remaining seed and the #2 seed will play the highest in the semi-finals the following week. The Championship Game will be played at Towson U the following week. Very interesting scenario in my opinion.

The new "movement/ realignment cycle" (my invented term, LOL) starts after the 2012-13 school year. Schools are allowed apply to to move up or down every two years, and the 2013-14 school year is when the next movement will take place. The vote will happen in the winter/spring of 2013. New schools can also apply to join the MIAA in the winter/spring of 2013 for the next two school years ('13-14 & '14-'15). I fully expect AACS, and possibly Archbishop Curley to apply to join the MIAA A conference in football, along with ECA. Rumor also has it that St Frances wants to jump from the C to the A in 2013. Personally, I think St Frances will have to play in the B conference for 2 years and apply to move up in 2015 if they are successful in the B. AACS will make a big push to join the A conference. However, they will no longer be allowed to bring in wholesale upperclassmen transfers, especially seniors. This ain't the WCAC. . As for ECA, they will have to make a very, very good case on and off the field to gain acceptance into the MIAA A. They will also have to prove that they will be able to compete after Sills leaves after the 2014 season. I think their chances are less than 50/50 at this point for a myriad of reasons. I have talked to people from a few MIAA A member schools, and I don't see it happening.

Eagle, a friend of mine emailed McDonogh's schedule to me. If this schedule is correct (I know the MIAA games & St Peters prep game are correct), I assume it is public knowledge at this point if I saw it. If tis schedule is indeed correct, McDonogh is playing Prep at home on 9/22.

    According to the schedule I have, you guys scrimmage South River 8/17 (H) & St. Paul's 8/24 (A). You open your season with Gonzaga 8/31 @4pm(H), St. Peter's Prep 9/8 @1:30(Patriot Classic), Penn Charter 9/15 @1pm(A), G'Town Prep 9/22 @1pm (H), Spalding 9/29 @1pm(H), Loyola 10/6 @2:30pm(A), Calvert Hall 10/12 @7pm (A, under the lights), MSJ, 10/20 @1pm (H), Gilman 10/27 @1pm (A). According to this schedule, McDonogh is playing 9 regular season games. Can you verify this?

I have Calvert Hall's schedule in hand. I will post it here as soon as I get approval.

Looks like Loyola is playing a murders row non-conference schedule again.

9/2 - St Johns Catholic Prep (finished 2-3 in the C conf last season)
    9/8 - Valley Forge
9/14 - Dematha (how did they sneak that one in there)
9/22 - Southern MD Christian Academy (may be a misprint, could be MD Christian)
    9/28 - Georgetown Prep

Good stuff Card. AACS will definitely want to jump to the A. I think they will probably be approved. I also think Curley will as well. I'm sure ECA will try but it will definitely be an uphill battle.

I'm hearing Gilman will play a 10 game schedule this year, personally I was hoping for 11.

With the number of teams the MIAA-A has, I like the way they are doing the playoffs if that is true. Should be interesting. I know you think CHC has a good chance of getting the #1 seed, I don't see it. Gilman looks like they are far and away the best team and with the two HUGE additions look even stronger than I thought.

I talked to a guy who has been to the first two games of the Grassroots League and I hear the 2-0 Baltimore team is flooded with CHC kids. Although he told me that Shanks from Gilman and Hill from ECA are easily the two best players on the team.

Card, I think the 9 game schedule comes from a misprint on the dates. The McD-Gilman game is always the 1st Saturday in November (unless the new quarter-finals prevent this for this season).

If they indeed intend to start the playoffs with all 6 teams making it, I think you will see many teams with 9-game regular-season schedules, because they would be locked into a 10th game in the first round of the playoffs now. Every team would make the playoffs, so all teams will play at least 10 games.

If they do add a 10th regular season game, I would look for it to be Landon. The Gonzaga game is scheduled to be played in Byrd Stadium now. It's interesting that Penn Charter is back on schedule, as they dropped McD in 2011 after a lopsided loss in 2010.

McD never plays actual games before the traditional Week 1 (8/31 this year). I don't think the administration allows games any earlier, so if the playoffs do start the week of 11/5, they will only play 9 regular season games.

I'm hearing that AACS will move up for 2013 as well. I've also heard rumblings of a on-campus stadium for them. They will be by far the newest football team in the A Conference, less than 10 years from no football to the A is incredible, especially considering that besides Spalding (1966), most of the other A Conference schools have been playing football since the 1800s.

I'm not sure Curley will be too quick to jump back to the A, everyone remembers how that worked for them in 2005. They are supposed to be making facility improvements though, I heard that the Curley Bowl will be getting turf in the near future.

I really don't think SFA will be allowed to move up from the C to the A, there is no precedent for such a move in either the MIAA or the IAAM since the founding of the leagues. They also need a major facility upgrade, I can't see MIAA A games at Patterson Park. However, if they can get into this new Dunbar facility UA is building, they will be a more attractive proposition.

The SFA people really need to slow down and remember that despite their 2011 success, they are still less than 2 years removed from a winless 2010 with 16 players on the roster. They are still a young program and need time to mature.

Also, the relative strength of the C Conference is so weak that 2 winless teams from the B dropped down (SFA/Severn) and went undefeated in conference play except for against each other. The leap in quality of play by jumping from the C to the A would be too much for any team to overcome. SFA got by in the C because they got a gift QB transfer and they could out-athlete everyone, they can't do that in the B, let alone the A.

I can't see ECA being added before they've had a school year and fielded a team. Also, I believe the MIAA requires members to sponsor at least 1 sport every season, so they need winter and spring sports to even be considered for admission. The MIAA will want to watch them and see if they like what they see. If all is well, ECA will come in in 2015 after the next realignment cycle.

They should consider themselves lucky to get in after only 4 years as a school, considering the youngest school in the MIAA, Gerstell Academy, who played there first conference schedule this year, has been around since 1996.

I not sure what ECA will do about Sills. In the State Of MD you are only allowed 4 years of a varsity sport. Most people have Sills at 2015 class, I could be wrong? Next Question to Harco. Does ECA have a field to plat there home games? If they do not I am sure they could find a lot of schools both HS and at the college level.

I have been told McDonogh's 9 game schedule is a done deal. I know all of McDonogh's MIAA dates I listed are correct. They came from the league. The MIAA regular season ending on the last weekend of October is confirmed. To the best of my knowledge, McDonogh has played either a 9 or 10 game seasons since Dom's arrived. With the arrival of quarterfinals this year, it pretty much leaves no room to maneuver. Calvert Hall and Loyola have a little more wiggle room, as the play on Thanksgiving. Penn Charter was pretty bad in 2011.

Archbishop Curley is getting turf and permanent lights. I don't care how nice AACS' facilities in the wings are, they will have to put the brakes on the wholesale and senior transfers if they want to get in to the A conf.

I think the MIAA will be hesitant to allow ECA to jump into the A conf. from day 1, even if it is in 2015. Many of ECA's players are there and were recruited because of Mr. Sills. He will be gone in 2015 and I do not see him aggressively bringing in talent after his son is gone. The school may succeed as a small, christian school, but the task of fielding an A conference team will be daunting once sills is gone, to say the least. They don't have the tradition. Like you said, it takes many years and decades to build up a base of alumni support without a single person funding an entire school. Personally, I do not see it happening in 2015 either.

I hope SFA can use the UA field, but am not so sure they will be allowed to share a facility built for a Public School. I think that would unprecedented. They are also doing the senior transfer open door thing for players. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it would have to stop for eventual A conference consideration.
