"I respect Fidel Castro," Guillen said in the article. "You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that son of a b---- is still there." Guillen apologized during a press conference Tuesday, speaking in Spanish.

Guillen said he had "betrayed a Latin community" and that he was speaking to "ask for forgiveness with my heart in my hand." But, he said, he originallly spoke of Castro in Spanish and "the translation to English was a bit confusing."
He betrayed the anti-Castro crowd, certainly not all members of the "Latin community."

MLB is a private business, and the Miami team is trying to attract rabidly anti-Castro Cuban-Americans to buy tickets. They can suspend him if they want.

    That said... it's stupid.

Agree on all points. Still 5 games seems pretty extreme...they could have suspended him for one game and they would have made their point with the possible ticket/merchandise buyers....

Castro is popular all over Latin America. The Miami Cubans are the exception for obvious reasons.Guillen has a history of sticking his foot into his mouth...

He works for a private company. His comments, whether taken out of context or not, pissed off a substantial number of potential customers for that company’s product. Not a good thing. He’s lucky. I’ve fired people for less.

Yea, Castro is popular everywhere where they DO NOT have Communism. That said, Guillen should be allowed his opinion without repercussions. That's the difference between here and Cuba. Of course, as a private employer, the Marlins may feel differently if he's hurting their business.

Funny how that's usually the case with communist leaders.

So if the LA Dodgers had a Manager who said negative things about the Shah or said something positive about the islamist government of Iran, do you think he would get suspended given LA has a large Iranian population?

It's certainly possible. I believe they once fired a general manager because of some "suspect" comments he unwisely chose to provide to a media source.

I have to admit this is probably the first instance of conservative political correctness I have ever seen, and it pisses me off as much as lefty political correctness.

Being an idiot and bringing controversy to his team.

The Marlins owners are struggling to build interest in the team and get fans to attend the games. Guillen's comments hurt the team PR-wise in a big way. It may be best for them to just fire him.

The private sector isnt a democracy. The Marlins can fire him if they want. Guillen should've known better.

5 games is nothing from a baseball standpoint, especially this early in the season. If it were footlball it would be a big deal. I think he got a slap on the wrist.

I guess Cubans have a lot of power in Florida.
