    series over

    congrats Bruins

    Caps suck
How was that a soft goal? defensive breakdown, rocket of slap shot on the ice in the corner, can't put that on holtby.

It was a soft goal because Holtby was WAY off his angle. If he's square to the shooter he gives Kelly a lot less room on the far post

Cut him some slack. Hardly a "soft goal". Perhaps (??), he "drifted" just a little bit too far to his right, but give credit (not blame) where credit is due. That was a freekin' rocket over his left shoulder. Few goalies, if any, would have had a chance to stop that from going in.

Take a close look at the video. Blow it up and stop it just as the puck is leaving the stick. You can make it out and see the trajectory....to me, it does NOT look like Holtby was out of position, or if he was, not by much. To me, it actually looked like there was more day light over Holtby's right (not left) shoulder. If anything, he might have come out of the paint a bit to cut off the angle more than he did. But this is nit-picky, armchair stuff. Sorry, but NO "soft" gaol.

Disagree. Soft goal. Does Thomas allow that goal? No. Doesn't matter, he's not the reason we lost or the reason this will end quick and painlessly. Major changes needed starting with the GM and Coach(please quit Tippett, please quit Tippett). Sign Kuznetsov, let Semin,Wideman,Knbule,King and Halpern walk and use the cap space to upgrade the roster (Give Parise whatever he wants)

"Does Thomas allow the goal"? No idea, and neither do you. That said, Thomas is, arguably, the best goalie in the NHL right now...so, to compare what he may have done, to a rookie goalie, is a bit much, IMO.

Fact is - If it weren't for Holtby's efforts, the Caps never even make it to OT.

With regards to the goal being soft, or not....I have my opinion and you have your's (which is definitley in the minority). Read some of the accounts of the goal, and none of them even suggest/hint that it was a softie. In fact, the Washington Post seems to imply that the puck was actually deflected by Dennis Wideman. If that's true (I can't tell from the video), then no question aboout it NOT being a softie.

But in the final analysis, I'm a B's fan, so if the Caps crash and burn...why do I care? I don't. But, with that said, I felt the Caps, and especially Holtby played a fabulous game. I think he has all the makings of a top NHL goalie.

Lots of people thought it was soft starting with Frankovic and many other Caps bloggers. Among Caps fans it's not the minority. If was a softie.

"Lots of people thought it was soft..." Really? Lots.

Ya have a links to some of those bloggers? I'd love to read exactly what they said.

As far as his Timmy being able to do any better against that shot:

According to hockey-reference.com, the last goalie 22 or younger to lose 1-0 game in OT was Marty Brodeur in '94 vs. #Sabres.

...I think that puts Holtby in pretty good company.

That said, we have this quote from the guys that were actually on the ice, and reviewed the video after the game:

""It's always nice to end it fairly early," said Kelly, who thought the shot deflected off a defenseman's stick. "Goalies are so good now I think the days of going down the wing and beating a goalie are long gone. So I was pleasantly surprised to see it go in."

    Deflection = NO SOFTIE.

    Try again.

Prove the shot was deflected and we'll agree it wasn't a softie. He "thinks" it was deflected isn't good enough. He was surprised it went it because it was a softie! He admitted it! Slapshots down the wing NEVER go in. Your own guy admitted it.

Rocket.....didn't look that way to me...average shot at best
Just above the top of the circle and from that angle

    I respectfully disagree Slap
IMO, Thomas and many more stop that with no problem

If you can't stop shots like that you don't win cups right ???

Guarantee you ask Holtby and he says he should have stopped it

either way, this series is over.....I look for your Bruins to sweep also

and for the record ......Holtby was fantastic. He is the only reason it was a close game.

or we could blame it all on Ovechkin

Holtby said he let the team down by not stopping a shot he "normally stops". His words not mine. the rest of the team let Holtby down. My guess is the story of this series is how Caps needed to win the game Holtby played so well and now that he's not playing well the Caps get sent packing in 4 or 5

I never blame it on Ovie. Highest active playoff points per game. He needs help and in the postseason he rarely gets it.

Ummm, and what preceded this...he thinks it was deflected. He was the man on the ice. He should know. Oh, and he did Not have to say that he thought it was deflected.

I think that says a lot, don't you?

Playing with B Laich as his Center, who got destroyed in the dot. Ovie was chasing the puck all night. If Hunter keeps that line together Ovie will be lucky to score 2 goals in this series
