Default Baltimore City employees abandon the city that feeds them!

This is shocking. No wonder so many city employees don't care about the city that feeds them!

In his blog post, Shafranovich points out that only about 56 percent of city employees actually live in the city. That’s 8,221 out of 14,559 employees. Of those, 743 don’t even live in the state of Maryland. (Nearly half of the out-of-staters work for the Police Department.)

I can't blame the po-po one bit either. They see the ***** that we live next to day in and day out up close and personal. They don't want their loved ones living anywhere near that. Politicians, bureaucrats, etc., feeding at the public trough should live in the city, though.

    Believe, Hon!

Shafranovich published the original article over 3 months ago. http://www.shaftek.org/blog/2012/01/...e-in-the-city/ I covered it here and here. It is pathetic that the mainstream media is only getting around to this now.

I lived in balto until my neighborhood changed. The result, loud moosic, loud parties, trash, rats, stolen cars, stolen tags, robbery, assaults, fear.

    That's why I left.

probably the public school system is why many of them don't live in Baltimore.

It's not just in Baltimore City, either. Employees in other jurisdictions don't always live in the same areas they work in either, for a multitude of reasons.

    A non-issue

It would be a bad move for the city if it required that its employees live within the jurisdiction.

A lot of people refuse to live in the city, for a variety of reasons... Crime, high taxes, horrible schools, etc. The city would be forced to hire less-qualified candidates. I think a residency requirement could very well hasten the city's decline.

If the city wants to bring in more families, they should at least create tax incentives. Require that a family live in the city for 10 years, and have them receive a 50% property tax cut as an incentive. If the family leaves within that 10-year period, breaking their part of the bargain, they should pay back taxes.

    Money talks.

exactly. I'm sure lots of citys have lots of workers that don't live in the city proper. but part of what this place seems to be is a bickerarama for the small minded.

Exactly - especially when both husband and wife work far apart and choose for a variety of reasons, to live closer to one place of employment. No problem when they pay their own commutes.

Are city police allowed to take city police cars to out-of-state homes?

The Police Department tried to restrict the place of residence for employees many years ago. It proved unenforceable. They then tried it with new hires. The potential pool of tenable candidates dropped to almost nil. It seems that the background requirements disqualified the vast majority of city residents that applied.

AFAIK, the use of take home cars is prohibited for out of state employees. The current spokesperson may be an exception though.

    Adam,
I wish the city would impliment some of your stratagies. I would make enough money from the law suite to pay off my house (thats not in the city). Really though, for anyone to think that an employee has to live in a certain area to be productive is fairly audacious and the spirit of the comment is angering. Most of the people that your talking about do more for the city residents (and I have to add for less money then surrounding agencies) then the vast majority of city residents do for each other.

Another democratic stronghold, Wilmington DE, requires folks that commute into the city for work, pay a 1% payroll tax.

    Taxation without representation

Isn't that one of the founding principles of our country?

There will be plenty of people around here to defend the idea though, I assure you.

It will get worse when the Tax & Spend Democrats raise taxes again!! Maryland is getting too expensive for people to live. It’s not only the City, but also a VERY LARGE number of State Employees live out of state. These people pay NO STATE TAXES; take jobs for Maryland Tax payers. The least they could do is pay the "Piggy-Back Tax" for the County where they are employed. In the WMD, you can go to any State Facility and you will find a sizeable number of PA & WV license tags. Last year the State of WV went to schools and forced people that had MD Tags on their cars to pay the WV Tax for vehicles or loose their jobs. Those MD resident lived in Allegany & Garrett Counties. If a Maryland resident wants to work for the States of Pa. of WV, you have to be a resident and this applies to most jobs at the Ballistics Plant across the border from Pinto, MD. I to will be selling and moving if the Property, Gas and Income Tax are increased. Raising taxes does nothing more than "decrease" the amount of revenues available?

The City has allowed the "Animals" take over the streets. Baltimore City is one of the Most Dangerous Cities in America and it gets that distinction because of the Animals.
