He did it for the same reason that Reagan raised taxes... Compromise. The republicans refused to let any bills get passed until the tax cuts were extended...

Same thing was true about Bush sr. He got crucified by Clinton and Carville for it, and rightly so. Don't make promises to get elected that you can't keep. When I support a candidate because of what he promised, I don't expect him to go back on that promise for any reason. Republicans held out for the balanced budget amendment in budget talks, but Obama didn't cave. So the tax cuts weren't as destructive as he originally stated I guess.
