Besides, it is inevitable that someone will bring up the "conservative, Bible thumping born-again Christian hypocrites, yada yada, etc.", 'thou shalt not kill" thing.
I hate to be the one to break this to you but there were many societies that had "values" before the bible.

By all means, explain to us the difference between murder and homicide
The difference is the existence of criminal intent, or the lack thereof.

Sorry but you're "behind the curve", so to speak. It's true many societies had and have values. Ours are descended mostly from English Common Law and these were based on Judeo-Christian values and principles.

We are often told that America is a country founded on Christian or Judeo-Christian values, but then, as now, there is a difference between believing in Christian values and in being a Christian. The founding fathers were a group of complete individuals and their religious beliefs were quite varied.

Our Founding Fathers knew Judeo-Christian principals and values even though some of them weren’t Christian. They had a respect and knowledge of these principals and values and knew that a people who lived by them would be productive and honorable people.

Many societies also had values that we don't, such as female circumcision, incest, gassing people, impaling people and a whole list of stuff we haven't gotten to, well, not just yet anyway.
