Default Moyer becomes oldest pitcher to win game in majors

Baseball's old man is still fending off Father Time.

Jamie Moyer showed there remains a place for a vintage lefty in a young man's game as the 49-year-old became the oldest pitcher to ever win a major league contest.

He threw seven strong innings and Dexter Fowler hit a two-run homer to help the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 5-3 on Tuesday night.

It would have been nice if the O's had picked up Moyer over the offseason to be the veteran in the rotation. He turned his career around in Baltimore, didn't he? Would have been a nice story here.

I don't think it would have been a good idea. it would have given him a chance to play for a little while longer, but that's about it.

At this point, he could have taken Matusz's rotation spot and performed better. And maybe he would have taught the kid something about how to pitch without overpowering stuff, too.

he won 1 game, but he lost 2 others. his ERA was almost 5.0 the last 2 seasons. you don't give a starting rotation job to him unless you're desperate for an arm or you're a team that is ready to compete now. everyone is down on Matusz, and for good reason. but he may have a future. Moyer doesn't.

that would be like benching Riemold so he can learn to be better by watching Gabe Kapler play LF every day. the benefits you're hoping for are minimal. Matusz had a veteran presence in the form of Guthrie and Millwood. it didn't help. why would this be any different?

We have too many young pitchers that we need to gauge. Bringing Moyer in would have taken innings away that we can't afford

You make some valid points, but right now the O's rotation has no true veteran. Moyer could have been a back end of the rotation guy and a long reliever when the rotation is full. He also would have been a nice feel good story that the O's lack now.

As far as being different, Moyer is the ultimate crafty veteran, more so than the other guys you mention. It certainly wouldn't have hurt to have a guy like him around.

Good for Moyer. I have a feeling that when he finally does retire, he's going to be a pitching coach for someone.

good points. I just don't think it would make too much of a difference either way.

I don't see any indication from the past that the O's having a veteran pitcher helps the young guys. Steve Trachsel, Pat Hentgen, Doug Drabek all come to mind.

Yeah, I see your point. Still, the conventional baseball wisdom seems to value having a veteran presence around to set an example and tutor the youngsters.
