Environmental influence reduction/elimination is the next generation of scoliosis treatment.

Idiopathic scoliosis is primarily a neurological condition that causes an child's spine to start twisting and bending around it's own axis during adolscent growth spurts. For unknown reasons, it affect females at a much higher rate than males and the peak incidence for rapid scoliosis curve progression is 12 years old.

While the exact cause of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis remains unknown, recent scientific breakthroughs in the field of genetic testing (Scoliscore) have helped determine the multi-factorial (having both environmental and genetic components) nature of the condition.

Environmental Influences + Genetic Pre-disposition = Idiopathic Scoliosis

Conventional scoliosis treatment methodology (scoliosis brace treatment and scoliosis surgery) are solely focused on treating just the spinal curvature, and not the underlying environmental influences that combine with the genetic pre-disposition that actually causes the spinal curvature. Any efforts to treat just the spinal curvature, without reducing/eliminating the environmental influences is going to have a low success rate and very limited long-term benefit.

A new scoliosis treatment process and methodology is emerging based on the idea that scoliosis can be prevented and possibly even cured with a scoliosis treatment program that focuses on the cause, not just the curve. This "environmental influence" reduction/elimination approach to scoliosis treatment will usher in a new generation in the field of scoliosis treatment.

What are "Environmental Influences" in scoliosis?

The topic of environmental influences in scoliosis is actually rather under-studied and relatively poorly understood, but the topic does appear fit into 3 catagories.

Bio-mechanical
Mis-alignment of the center mass of the head and pelvis in relation to the torso
Trauma related ligament damage in the spine
Loss of the normal "good spinal curves" in the side view dimension

Bio-Chemical
Nutritional deficiencies (Selenium?)
Chronic myco-bacterium infections?

Specific Activities
Vertical compression of the spinal column (Weight lifting above one's head, trampoline)
Activities the cause a "flattening" of the mid back (back bends, sleeping on one's stomach)

What is the "Scoliosis BootCamp" program?

We set out to re-invent scoliosis treatment over a decade ago with mission and mind-set to find a better way to treat scoliosis in the future. The driving philosophy behind the develoment of the treatment methodology was to treat the presumed cause of the scoliosis condition, not just the spinal curvature (symptom). Incredibily enough, it works very consistantly and often with dramatic results.

Word of the new scoliosis treatment success spread quickly and patients from thousands of miles away start contacting us asking how they can get their children enrolled in the program as soon as possible. Unfortunately, having a parent and child move to a location close enough to travel to a treatment center for 4-6 months isn't possible in most cases, so we developed a "Scoliosis BootCamp" or Intensive Care program for non-local scoliosis patients.

The "Scoliosis BootCamp" program is a one to two week (10 treatment days) program providing 4-6 hours of customized scoliosis treatment daily and allows scoliosis patients to halt the progression and reduce the size of their scoliosis spine condition in a very short time period. The "Scoliosis BootCamp" achieves these scoliosis treatment goals throught the reduction and elimination of the environmental influences that help cause scoliosis, as well as treating the spinal curvature itself. In addition, most "Scoliosis BootCamp" patients also experience a reduction of the rib hump, reduction/elimination of back pain/headaches, improved pulmonary function (breathing ability), improved overall cosmetic appearance, and a re-newed sense of empowerment/hope.

How does the "Scoliosis BootCamp" program work?

The "Scoliosis BootCamp" program is based on the "mix, fix, and set" scoliosis reduction protocol.

The "Mix" component
Spinal/curve flexibility is the different between a "fix-able" functional scoliosis curve and a "non fix-able" structural scoliosis curve. Essentially, the more flexible the curve is the more fix-able it is. The "Mix" component of the "mix, fix, and set" treatment protocol uses various vibration therapies and specific stretching (passive and active) forces to increase curve flexibility as much as possible to increase overall scoliosis curve reduction.

The "Fix" component
The "fix" component of the "mix, fix, and set" protocol is often referred to the "Chiropractic adjustment" portion of the scoliosis treatment. We have created a specific set of "scoliosis specific Chiropractic adjustments" which are based on de-rotation and traction of the scoliosis curves. The end result is a safe, effective, and painless method of mobilizing spinal vertebrea crucial to the scoliosis rehabilitation process.

The "Set" component
The "set" component of the "mix, fix, and set" protocol is generally referred to as the scoliosis rehabilitation portion of the program. Since idiopathic scoliosis is primarily a neurological condition with it's primary affects on the spine, it is absolutely imparative to "re-train" the automatic postural control centers in the brain to "learn" the "new normal" spinal position. This is primarily accomplished through our 3-D auto correction rehab system that automatically triggers the correct brain signals from the postural control centers and causes a self correction back to a more desireable spinal position. This neuro-muscular rehabilitation is the heart and soul of the "set" component of the protocol and it's effectiveness is further enhanced by the increased scoliosis curvature flexibility and vertbral joint motion from the "mix" and "fix" components that proceeded it.

The rotation pattern in the thoracic spine (mid back) of scoliosis patients with curvatures larger than 30 degrees is significantly different that scoliosis patients with scoliosis curvatures under 30 degrees. It is for this reason the "Scoliosis Traction Chair" (STC) was developed and needs to be utilize in the treatment of most severe scoliosis spines. While the STC may look somewhat intimidating, it is not painful and is completely safe.
Following the 2 week "Scoliosis BootCamp" program, the patient is required to complete a daily home rehabilitation program that generally requires 45-90 minutes to complete over the course of a normal day for 4-6 months before re-evaluation of stabilized scoliosis curve reduction.
