    Who Gets Food Stamps?

The most recent Department of Agriculture report on the general characteristics of the SNAP program’s beneficiaries says that in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2010:

47 percent of beneficiaries were children under age 18.
8 percent were age 60 or older.
41 percent lived in a household with earnings from a job — the so-called “working poor.”
The average household received a monthly benefit of $287.
36 percent were white (non-Hispanic), 22 percent were African American (non-Hispanic) and 10 percent were Hispanic (Table A.21).

Something's wrong here. Those percentages by race only add up to 68%. What are the other 32%, Asians? (I doubt it.)

What are whites, 70% of the population, but only 36% of foodstamp recipients?

Thanks, Matt--that helps. Even with a "race unknown" category, it still doesn't get us to 100%; only 92.8%. Those missing 7.2% must be beyond categorization--I don't weant to meet them. Just feed them.

The surprising stat is that only 8% are "60 or older".

I'm not surprised. Many of the 60 or older lower income people live in housing where the cost is based on income or they are living in homes that they have already paid for.
