If he were DHing, it wouldn't be considered rest. He'd have to warm up, hit the cages this morning, etc. there hasn't been a single manager in 3 decades that didn't rest his catcher. Doesn't matter how old he is

Matt Wieters is capable of DHing today with NO PROBLEM
Well you made reference to the streak.

I'm sure Wieters could DH today no problem. Now what condition will he be in come August and September?

Gotta laugh at the Cal comparisons. I don't see Jones take a day off yet. Hardy's had 1 and Nick has had 1. Wieters is going to play 130 games tops. We knew that going in.

I found this comment on fangraphs:
    http://www.fangraphs.com/forums/topic.php?id=3636
Using Retrosheet's data from 2000-2009, the league BABIP on plays where a baserunner was marked as running on the pitch that the batter put in play was .330. There were about 20,000 such plays marked. The overall league BABIP over that time was .298, so that's a significant improvement.

That includes some non-hit-and-run plays, most notably plays where the runner goes on a 2-out full count pitch, which the defense never guards against. If you remove the plays with a full count and 2 outs from the sample of runners going on the pitch, then the league BABIP was .350 in about 12,000 balls in play.
So maybe it is a good play generally and perhaps watching poor Oriole teams execute it for years has colored my judgement or it could be I'm biased against it and only remember the failures. Either way, I'd like to see one of these sabermetric guys do an in depth analysis.

To me the hit and run depends on alot of things: generally don't like doing it with speed on the bases and a strikeout guy like Hardy. Normally you do it to stay out of double plays or change it up if your O is struggling. So in that case I would disagree with it. If Markakis was up or Wieters fine but not Hardy with speed on 1st.

Impossible to predict either way. Wieters is hot......he can rest later. And I'm not talking about catching a day game after a night game. And just because the book says so.....does that make it right ?

but hey you guys enjoy NJ

It does seem like there are a lot of variables that go into determining whether to use it. The type of pitcher you're facing probably should play into the decision as well. My initial post was a bit reactionary. Hey, it's a game thread!

I love Buck as a manager but putting Johnson,Reynolds, Davis back to back to back is mind boggling. Like Moonbeam at a Mensa meeting

This is now a game O's have to win. Up 5-2, looking at a 5-2 road trip heading to Anaheim. Blow this lead, with Matusz pitching tomorrow and we're in deep deep doo doo. I'd be shocked if we won a game in Anaheim if we choke this away.

That with a 3-2 count was a hit and run situation
