    Default Typewriters

Anyone still use a typewriter? Did you take typing in high school?

I was going through a National Geographic from 1976 which had an ad for the new Smith Corona cartridge ribbons.... "just snap them on." The ribbon can be replaced in 3 seconds.

I googled to see if they still make typewriters and found some companies still do.

Btw, Smith Corona is still in business, making labels, ribbons and typewriter supplies.

I have one sitting next to my feet right now but I haven't used it in years. It's made by Brother.

I've still got the one I got as a graduation present (HS) somewhere...and until only a couple years ago used one at work once in a while when submitting certain paperwork to the FDA.

I took typing in high school in 9th grade. it was college prep and they wanted us to be able to type our own term papers.

that class was LOUD. click click click 15 to 20 students all typing frenzy!

I guess it helped me because I took a typing test as part of the interview for where I still work and did pretty good on the typing test. The lady who tested me was impressed I remember! I think I did 30 or 35 words a minute which she said was pretty darn good.

There's nothing I enjoy more than using my typewriter while talking on my rotary telephone. If I need to do any calculations while using the typewriter, I pull out my sliderule.

At least you learned a skill that can be transferred to computers.

In my high school they taught typing for 'business track' students.

One of these days we need to do a thread on "what's the oldest thing (machine) you have in the house."

I know. It was a coinky-dink. When I started here I was a file/mail clerk and didn't use a keyboard at all. Now everyone here uses computers even the lowly mail clerks I think. The file clerks are long gone.

There is a place in Baltimore where you can still get typewriters, parts, supplies and repairs. Ken & Ray's on Chestnut Ave in Hampden, I bought my first typewriter from them when I was in junior high school in the early 70's, they were located on North Ave. back then. They were one of the first companies to advertise on channel 45 when it first went on the air.

Also, when I am talking on my rotary telephone and I need to look at the time to tell the other person I need to go, I talk a look at my sundial. It doesn't seem to work at night though ... major desgin flaw in that thing.

My father used to collect things.... a few, not that many. He had a real nice abacus, and he also had a good looking hourglass. They sat on a shelf, like art objects.

Was there a counterpart to the sundial?

I still have my sliderule from high school. I have not used it in many years. I have no idea why I kept it around so long.

I still have my slide rule and found a great use for it. Several years ago there was a woman in a class I was taking that always wanted to borrow my calculator because she forgot to bring hers to class. I became tired of this so I took my slide rule to class one day and handed it to her to use. She was thoroughly confused and said that it was not a calculator, she became totally flustered when the instructor told her that it WAS a calculator. She never asked to borrow my calculator again.

that's funny, me too, we were right on the cusp of big changes .......

got an electric typewriter (olivetti) to go away to college in 1977, spent my freshmen year programing in fortran with punch cards, by 1982 there was a PC Design class and we were remotely programing on a commodore 64 while drinking beer in our apartment off campus ........

    that's a crazy five years ......

similar experience in grad school in the mid 90's while the web browsing end of the internet was cranking up ........
