2012 MLB All-Star Game: Young Bryce Harper is the Center of Attention

Bryce Harper's statistics at the all-star break are almost identical to Mickey Mantle and Ken Griffey Jr., when they were 19. In 248 at-bats, Harper’s slash line (batting average/on-base percentage/slugging percentage) is .282/.354/.472. In 238 at-bats in 1951, Mantle was .261/.341/.424. In 269 at-bats in 1989, Griffey’s numbers at the break were .279/.343/.472. For their full years, Mantle’s on-base plus slugging was .792, Griffey’s .748 and Harper’s is now .826.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports...W_story_1.html

"Everything about Harper operates at two levels simultaneously. He’s every good thing you think he is, but you have to understand that he intends, and has always intended, to be one of the greatest players ever. It’s simply his operating assumption, one that helps him work fanatically hard, until there’s a reason to change it. So far, nothing’s made him alter his goals."

Slide thinks that Bryce Harper is a "Dick".

I feel pity for Stevey. O.k., that's not true. I actually feel nothing for Stevey.

it's not good enough that the Nats are playing well and probably headed for the post season. he can't be happy about that. he has the burning need to troll a baltimore sports site to brag about the fact that, for the first time ever, a DC baseball team seems to be better than a Baltimore baseball team.

at the end of it all, he still wants to be a Baltimorian because we have the history of greatness, even though that history has been tarnished from a decade plus of neglect.

it's too bad, some people don't know how to be happy.

    Byngo !

Except for the fact that Baltimore didn't actually have a baseball team until 1970 or so**, while DC had a baseball team for half a century before that.**

    * Ok, 1954. But I was close.

** DC did have a baseball team for a long time, but it was barely a major league team.

it's kinda implied that I'm talking about the years where both cities had a team

I want to be a Baltimoron? Have you been skipping your meds again, weird-one? Baltimore has this history of greatness? What color is the sky on your planet? I have never ever wanted to in any possible way be associated with your armpit of a city. I have lived in the State of Maryland for almost all of my 69 years and I consider Maryland's largest city to be an extreme embarrassment to the State of Maryland. It is an STD-infested, scholastically-challenged, dope and drug-infested, homicide-ridden disgrace. Baltimore has earned its nickname of Harm City.

Now, as far as sports are concerned, I cannot see anything exceptional about Baltimore that sets it above any other other major American city. What is this history of greatness that you have mentioned? During its sports history, Baltimore has managed to lose at least one MLB team, one NFL team, one NBA team, and nine assorted minor league hockey teams. Baltimore has a beyond pitiful arena. Because of its terrible arena, Baltimore will never approach the sports greatness of a Washington, Philadelphia, or New York.

I am proud to consider myself a life-long Washingtonian.

For someone who doesn't care what "Baltimorons" think, you sure spend a lot of time here trying to convince us that you're right about everything.

Napoleonic complexes are an ugly, ugly thing.

Ok, he had a major slump after the break, but he has been on fire the last 2 months. The only guy I can see beating him for ROY is Todd Frazier for the reds, but he has cooled off as of late.

Congrats to Bryce Harper, 2012 NL Rookie Of The Year

Harper turned 20 on Oct. 16 and has been hyped for years. When he was just 16, he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated with the headline "CHOSEN ONE."

The Washington Nationals outfielder got 16 of 32 first-place votes from the NL panel. Miley was second with 12 first-place votes, followed by Cincinnati slugger Todd Frazier with three firsts and 45 points. Harper appeared on every ballot, and Bill Center of U-T San Diego was the only voter who didn't include Miley.

Harper was the top pick in the 2010 amateur draft and batted .270 with 22 home runs and 59 RBIs as Washington brought postseason play to the nation's capital for the first time since 1933. Only Tony Conigliaro (24) hit more home runs as a teenager.

I watched the ROY show on MLB. they were saying it was too close to call in the NL. I never really felt that way. BH seemed to be everyone's favorite all year.

I believe that Jones, Markakis, Wieters and Reimold did not win Rookie of the Year. I believe that Bryce Harper did.

comparing the accomplishments of a rookie call up (less than a week after his debut) to a list of seasoned players, is idiotic.

it's equally idiotic to reply to that post several months later.

this post is as bad as those we see from people who annually predict the O's will win 90+ games. then they crow that they were "right all along" when the O's finally do it 10 yrs later.

I heard that Machado was called up just a little too soon this year and will not be eligible next year?

Shame, I think he's gonna have a huge season next year at the plate and in the field.

I really enjoyed watching him play this past season.

Guys like him and Trout are great for the game.
