Why is the child being identified? The embarrassment and social stigma could damage the child's psyche for the remainder of his/her life.

Holson-Anderson was charged with giving a minor access to a firearm, reckless endangerment and having a handgun on her and in a vehicle, the documents said.
Good news. It's fortunate that no one was hurt and it sounds like the laws are already in place to adequately take care of this sort of negligent behavior. If the story is as reported then the State now has an opportunity to make an example of her. She volunteered for some serious prison time. Something tells me that won't happen.

Vernetta is being held on $500,000 bond. Seems a little excessive.

A 4 year old with a gun is a little excessive...if the penalty is not severe, theres no point in the charges. If the safety of your kid isn't enough of a motivator, all thats left is the penalty.

Bond is not supposed to be the penalty.

Life sucks in all sorts of ways when you live the life that has your 4 year old taking a gun to pre-K.

Beyond that, anytime you have to pay to be released from jail, thats a penalty. Complicated, stupid lifestyles bring all sorts of hardships, posting bail is one of them.

Never really thought about it that way, but now I wonder what penalties have been applied to parents in these cases, expecially when a child dies.

Never enough, which is why I disagree with Jeebus on the bail being excessive. Send a message one way or the other. If you have a problem with "excessive" bonds or penalties, adjust your lifestyle and it wont be an issue.

I don't have a problem with it, in fact, she can stay there and rot until the trail starts. Which she will, since it's doubtful she can afford paying 10% to a bailbondsman.

I was simply saying that even those accused of armed robbery, car jacking, sexual assault, or in some rare cases murder often have lower bail amounts then half a million dollars.

280+ items – Find penal code and offense wise approximate bail amounts

Bail is set to guarantee the defendant return for trial, it's not supposed to punish.

They must have serious misgivings about her reliability to return for her trial, maybe those previous drug convictions on her record are playing a part.

Thats a fair point, Jeebus. It sometimes seems bail is random and does not follow a set parameter. But like you say, maybe theres a reason we don't know about that prompted the amount.

I still say that having to put up thousands of dollars just to get out of jail prior to being found guilty of a crime is a sort of punishment for a lifestyle that gets you in that position in the first place.

There are toys that look more like real handguns than some of these .22 deringers. Some of these really look like toys. I'm surprised it hasn't happened before.
