    Default Give MacPhail his due...

Chris Davis and Tommy Hunter for Koki Uehara was a sweet deal. Add to that Jones and Hardy and that's three position players and a starter for pieces they can live without. Yes the Reynolds trade may not have been greatest and the minors aren't in great shape but considering his employer they were good cheap trades. Davis, Weiters, Jones and Bundy along with Matusz, Britton, Johnson and Arrieta gives the O's key players for years at cheap prices, that's what Peter likes, job accomplished. Duquette has been passed the mantle and has done well at cheap ball. They could write a book together, Cheap Ball, my time with the Orioles...

Wieters was drafted/cultivated under Flanagan's watch, as was Johnson.

Not sure about Arrietta, Matusz or Britton.

Arrietta was drafted same year as Wieters I believe.

He did some ridiculously stupid, stupid, stupid things.

Picking up Davis, Hunter, and Strop were not among them, though I think Hunter is a number 5 guy at best.

MacPhail's best move was bringing in Hardy. Davis looks promising at 1B, but 5 K's today is alarming. Robert Andino is a good alternative to Roberts .Strop a good waiver claim. Hunter had an awful game today and now has given up 9 HR's on the season. Maybe in a few years we can give MacPhail credit on Machado and Schoop. Possibly even Matusz.

It may be a little early to start giving credit; the season isn’t even a quarter through!!

Wieters and Arrieta were drafted under Flanagan but then he was replaced by MacPhail like weeks later. I believe Johnson was drafted back when Thrift was GM.

AM's failures were caused by his setting low expectations not by his trades. Trading Bedard and Koji were no-brainers but AM at least pulled the trigger. The O's march to the playoffs in 2012 is the direct result of DD setting high expectations and the collapse of the Red Sox and the Yankees. I've always felt that the O's had at least average talent throughout the AM years but consistently underperformed because it was acceptable to do so.

In 4+ years, here are the pitchers that Andy "Grow the arms" MacPhail added who are contributing this year:
    - Hunter
    - Matusz
    - Strop
    - Gregg
    - Patton

In six months, Duquette has added:
    - Chen
    - Hammel
    - Ayala
    - Lindstrom

    The Flanagan regime brought in:
    - Johnson
    - Arrieta
    - Wieters (a big part of the pitching success story)

O'Day was acquired during the GM search after MacPhail left.

Yes, give MacPhail his due. Recognize that the O's were never going to win with him at the helm.

Eh. I said it for a long time, MacPhail did a pretty good job here. Just look at the roster. The guy brought in a lot of the guys that we're succeeding w now. I'm sure he'd have loved to inherited the roster in 07 that DD did in 11. And that isn't to diminish the good that DD has done; or that the previous administrations did either. But MacPhail brought in some talent, and if this teams does end up weathering the inevitable storms coming, he certainly deserves some of the credit.

C- Wieters (not drafted but signed to his first professional contract)
    1b- Davis (traded for)
    2b- Andino (traded for)
    SS- Hardy (traded for)
    3b Reynold (traded for)
    RF Markakis (extended)
    CF Jones (traded for)
LF Reimold (didn't have much to do w, but didn't piss away for TB's SS either)

1 SP JA (didn't draft but signed to his first professional contract)
2 SP Hammel (Had nothing to do with)
3 SP Chen (Pretty obvious that the O's were in on him before DD took over)
    4 SP Matusz (Drafted)
    5 DP Hunter (Traded for)

CL JJ (Didn't have much to do w)
    SU Strop (Traded for)
SU Lindstrom (Had nothing to do w)
RP O'Day (Had nothing to do w, a Buck move imo)
RP Ayala (Had nothing to do w)
    RP Patton (Traded for)
    RP Gregg (Signed as FA)

General Manager's are judged on wins-and-losses.

MacPhail failed to win 70 games in any of his full four seasons.

Well, I guess it's Obama's fault that the country was losing hundreds of thousands of jobs in Jan 09.

Oh, wait, the real world doesn't work like that.

The guy TRADED for over half of our everyday starters. I'd say if this team keeps it up and succeeds he deserves at least some of the credit.

My poster child for the MacPhail era is Felix Hitting Machine Pie.

You may want to go over to the National News or Politics forum, because that argument makes no sense here.

Again, MacPhail failed to win 70 games here, that cannot be debated.

Again where is all this love, admiration, and credit coming from when the season is still not even a quarter old??

You guys make it so easy for those people who will be here later in the season to laugh and mock you. You are acting as if the season is over and the O’s have killed all of the demons that have haunted them for 14 years.

Some of you are sounding quite a bit like Travis. This is expected from that jerk off, that is what he lives for, but some of you have taken a page from him and are making serious fools of yourselves.

Enjoy what your team is doing now but don’t go overboard, most intelligent people that know anything about baseball know that it will not last and the O’s are more likely to finish where they have the last 14 years than in 1st place or in the playoffs.

I'm not all that impressed with Hunter o be honest.
In fact I think he a Matusz are the O's 2 weakest Starters.
Right now Hunter should be the #4 Starter and Matusz the #5, but I think the O's could do better by moving Matusz to the Bullpen and making Hunter the #5 Starter. I'm just not sure who else the O's could move into the #4 spot. I see Hunter as a 10-13 type pitcher. I expect his stint with the O's to be like Gutherie's. A lot of innings but struggling to stay above .500 as a Pitcher.

Translation: your team is better than mine for now and I'm so insecure that I must try and ruin any enjoyment you are having.

You'd think with all of their championships, a Yankees fan wouldn't be completely intimidated by a regular loser winning some games. Pathetic.
