If Buck had gone with a starter rather than Chris Davis, Bobby Valentine would probably have done the same and we would not have seen their position player in there. I think it probably happened so fast, especially seeing that Matusz actually went over to the bullpen that Valentine did not take the time, if in fact anybody in the Sox dugout knew in the first place, to find out that Chris Davis was initially drafted as a pitcher. It was a good calculated risk by Showalter, that just happened to pay off. As much as Davis is playing his performance down, he was apparently a pretty good pitcher in Collage.

Well, Davis was definitely a lot better pitcher than the Sox guy, McDonald, was. McDonald was throwing eye-level BP fastballs.

Davis acquitted himself quite well. I still think he ended up pitching better than Matusz would have.

You may well be right because I do not see Matusz as a pitcher for 'pressure' situations like this and he is very obviously having confidence problems on the mound. From what I understand, Davis was having some arm injury problems which is why they changed him to a position player and there was a fear that going into pitch might cause a recurrence of that. It was a calculated risk that thankfully, both for Davis and the result, paid off.
