Default Any Clear Internet Customers Here?

My Comcast connection has been crap for about the last 5 days and I think it may be time for a change. Since Clear is pay as you go now, I'm considerign giving it a try out. I realize I'll lose some speed, but considering last night, it was a chore just keeping a connection with Comcast, I may be able to live with that

I'm not, but I was really thinking about it.

My son, (who is part owner of two independent Apple stores in the small mid-west town we live in, too small for Apple to build here) had at one time a contract to promote them in his stores. After about 6 months they dropped them as his customers were really unhappy with their connections and Customer support.

That all I can add for ya, as he told me not to do it.

Thanks for the input RRG. I've been trying to get reviews from the net and they seem mostly negative, but I swear to God last night I wanted to drive to Comcast's corporate headquarters in Pa and strangle someone. I normally don't have any issues but the last 5 days or so has been unbearable with what I'm paying them.

The good thing though is Clear is offering a refurbished modem for $19.99 and I can try out their $34.95 plan. Worse comes to worse if I don't like it I'm only out a little over $50 since their service is no contract now.

How long have you had your Comcast equipment, modems, etc.? It may just be that they are on their way out. I would take them/it back to Comcast and swap for new equipment and see if that helps.

I've had Comcast internet @ 2 years now... no problems yet.

Not quite a year. I haven't had any problems either until late last week into this week

    Ken,

I have Clear. Have had it for 1-2 years (?). It was Xohm when I signed up.
I got disgusted with Comcast and decided to give it a try. No complaints. Service has been very reliable. It's not as fast, but I don't need huge bandwidth.

That's exactly why I'm considering switching. I'm kind of over the super duper speed thing. I'll settle for a steady connection which is what I've been getting up until last week. I may be in line for a router change. It dropped while I was typing this post

Btw, Comcast offers 3 different internet service speeds, economy, mainstream and fastest.

I had problems with Comcast at one point. Speeds would get very slow and sometimes I would lose connections all together.

First call had the genius blaming the problems on an area outage.

Second call and the excellent rep was like, "Oh, you have a very old modem that has been discontinued. Come in and swap it out."

New modem and the problems disappeared.

You see I could go with the equipment issue if this has been a constant thing, but it just started last week. I guess I'll call them today and see if there's anything on their end that can help. I couldn't even watch a movie on netflix last night without constant loading

Mine wasn't constant at first. It slowly got worse and worse until the connection was out more often than not.

I just brought a new Motorola SB6121 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. Comcast system will not accept the MAC #. I am thinking about getting FIOS. Does anyone have any input on FIOS?

Are you sure about that? I was just reading customer comments for that modem on Amazon and all the the Comcast customers who posted said they had no problems with Comcast accepting it. In fact one review stated they didn't even need the MAC address. Here's one of the posts

This review is from: Motorola SB6121 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem (Personal Computers)

12/14/2011 Just received the Motorola SB6121 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem today. Followed the self-install instructions included with the modem, using Comcast internet, and a Medialink Wireless N router, and was up and running in 20 minutes.

Here's how my setup went. Disconnect your old modem. Connect the SB6121 modem to your internet coaxle cable. Now connect the ethernet cable to both the SB6121 modem and your computer. Power up the SB6121 modem and wait for all lights to stop flashing (must have solid lights), then power up your computer. Now, open Internet Explorer browser and wait for the Xfinity screen to automatically show up on your Internet Explorer's screen. Enter your Comcast account number and the phone number associated with your Comcast account on the screen, where asked, and press next. The SB6121 modem will then be automatically identified and recognized. Press next to accept the Motorola SB6121 cable modem, then wait a few minutes for the next screen to show up while the information is being processed, then press finished. 3 screens total. Disconnect the ethernet cable from your computer and connect it to your router. Now, power both the SB6121 and your router off and wait 10 seconds. Now, power the SB6121 modem on and wait for all the lights to show themselves. Now, power on your router. You should be able to go online wirelessly. Literally that simple. The Comcast Xfinity self-install screens did not ask me for a MAC address or a serial number. Total time - about 20 minutes to remove the old modem and install the SB6121. Best part, no having to call tech support and no frustration!

Wow, I don't understand that. It's the best of the Motorola modems on the Comcast DOCSIS Device Compatibility and Capability chart.

I've had Comcast for about 15 years now, and I swear I've had more problems with them in the last 4 months than I had in the previous 14+ years... COMBINED. It's really shameful.

I don't have it active right now, but for a while my work situation led me to get a Virgin Mobile 3G device. Aside from streaming video, it served its purpose for me quite well. Worked pretty well everywhere I went in the Baltimore metro area.

There are these red poles all over right outside our development that say "Buried Fiber Optic Cable" now. I'm praying it means FIOS is on its way very soon. If that doesn't happen soon, I'll probably give DirecTV and slower internet a chance for a while.

Do they have their own infrastructure or would they be piggy backing onto the Comcast hardware?

tw, I hope you get your problem resolved. I'm also interested in getting a Motorola SB6121 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem to replace my Comcast modem one of these days. I've read a lot of good comments on it. Where did you get yours?

ken... thanks for the post on the self-install instructions.

Well my issue appears to have been with the router. I decided to buy a new router since mine was a few years old and I bought it used on ebay at that, the new dual band router appears to have fixed the problem. It just seems weird that it just stopped working all of a sudden and not gradually. I guess I owe comcast an apology
