    Default Fired for "living in sin"

    Did they invade her privacy by becoming involved in her non-work private life? Does working for a church-related institution change anything in the conventional work laws that would let them fire her based on her off-work life?

    A Colorado woman claims she was unfairly fired from her job at a private, Christian liberal arts university after administrators asked if she was "living in sin" with her boyfriend.

    I would have said "none of your business" and had a slam dunk case if they fired me

    It will be interesting to see how this works out.

    "We believe she was penalized for her lifestyle, mainly living with her boyfriend," Schaefer said. "We had attempted to approach [the university] prior to filing a lawsuit and were told the usual, that our case had no merit and they would defend it vigorously of course."
    The appropriate response when questioned about her living arrangements would be 'none of your business'. Of course, there is probably more to the story.

    Well, at least now she knows that all her co-workers there are without sin and are very Christ-like.

    It's things like this that make me feel lucky...I couldn't/wouldn't work for somebody knowing that I am going against their beliefs or they against mine to the end of getting fired over it. Not that I think it's any of their business, but it would just make me feel like a hypocrite.

    If they fired her merely for he living situation that's a slam dunk lawsuit, unless as TFMM said there was some sort of clause. The clause thing is unlikely though because a rep from the school was quoted in the story as saying it was performance related. It would be a simple matter of convincing a civil jury that you were wrongfully terminated if it was because of a living situation.

    again, if she is an at will employee that's not true .......

    can fire an employee for any reason unless its a violation of some type of discrimination law .......

    right or wrong, the rest of the world's not like the government or union shops .......

    Sorry but "living in sin" is not a legally protected status.
