I am very happy for the kids at Dunbar, City and Douglass on getting new turf fields.

We all know UA Prep is Plank's alma mater, St John's in DC

Great news and well deserved for Dunbar. Pretty amazing it took years to get one turf field in the city, and now there will be 3 installed just this year.

Congrats to Dunbar and East Baltimore as a whole. Long overdue. But I had to LOL at Coach Smith saying that Dunbar's goal is to be a National Powerhouse! National Powerhouse? What is he on? No team can be a National Powerhouse playing in the Maryland state system the way it is constituted today. Just impossible. And it's even more impossible playing in Maryland 1A. No Polls will ever put them in the Top 50 playing in that classification.

I'm a HUGE Dunbar supporter but Smith put it out there. If their goal is to be a National Power, then voluntarily move out of 1A and into 3A or 4A. You can't talk like that unless your willing to back it up with actions.

We are not saying today we are a national power today. We are saying this move will allow us to evolve into the next phase which is to become a national power. Until we can compete with Gilman, Good Counsel and Calvert Hall year in and out....hard to be a national anything, but you must have VISION. IF you never speak it into existence, it never happens.

    Few questions

Is Maryland now a hot bed for talent that is climbing up the ladder for recruiting football talent in the US?
Has Dunbar put out a number of D1 talent over the last 5 years?
Who has more championships than Dunbar since 1993?
Now, I will say that we have a way to become a National power....in the same breath, I think we have the perfect storm working for us. Gilman, Calvert and Loyola can only take but so much talent in Baltimore.

Here is the reason I think that we will be a National Power in 5 years

Dunbar will be out of 1A jail in about a year because I believe enrollment numbers are going to increase. Which means....you guessed it more boys in the school. MORE ATHLETES TO HAVE DEPTH to play with the big boys week in and out. It shouldn't matter but it does....we have the best uniforms in the business (biased) and the UA accessories make the uniforms look more attractive . With different helmet and uniform combos it attracts kids....hell I want to suit up again! Look what uni's did for Oregon. #3. Schollys! Parents see results. Athletes are getting qualified and going to college and D1 schools for free 99 ...which is the primary objective. Now you add Dunbar having their own "death valley". The roar of a crowd that you can hear downtown to north ave on fridays in front of thousands. It will be the perfect friday night affair in east Baltimore!!!!! POETS COMING OUT OF THAT TUNNEL with smoke, pyro, jumbo tron and 8th grader ballers see this and they wanna go where?

They will add more to the schedule...they will play better competition....they will get stronger with larger enrollment...feeder systems will continue to get stronger....

You are 100% correct. Lawrence's statement has officially put Dunbar out there in a myriad of categories. Now they have no choice but to be able to not just roll with the punches, but stand there and take them in the chin sometimes. They are coming, and rightfully so. They can't hide behind the 1A argument or claim to be unaware in matters concerning transfers and other areas in which Dunbar is criticized and make a statement to a newspaper about becoming a "national power". They don't go hand in hand. You can't have it both ways.

On another note, the Calvert Hall vs Dunbar game in the I-95 Kickoff Classic is not garnering national attention, but it sure is gathering momentum locally. I have talked to quite a few people on both sides who are already looking forward to this game. It could be the highest attended game of the weekend. There are so many sub plots involved in the match up. It should be very intense, to say the least.

Really? Everyone knows Dunbar has done a great job recruiting lately. This year's team will be loaded with talent. That's never been the issue at Dunbar. They have beautiful uniforms. Unless Plank buys you a game plan, they won't help you win the game. LOL

I understand that Smith isn't saying that Dunbar is a National Power right now and that the ultimate goal is to become one. I get it. But playing in 1A or 2A isn't going to cut it. I do not believe playing in any state division is going to cut.

The way the Polls work now, unless you play at least 3 OOS or OOC games against other National or regional powers, your not getting ranked. Things are different now than it was 3-4 years ago. And it's getting worse. Dunbar has to play mandatory games against City teams. And because of this, they will not have the schedule to be considered a power.

I believe Dunbar will get even more talent now. I really do but, a lot of it no fault of its own, just really can't generate a schedule that would move the pollsters. That being said, if your goal is to be a power as to be honest I think they should at first try and become a TRUE state power(on the level of Gilman and GC) and you should voluntarily move up to 3A or 4A.

His counterpart is no slouch. Colar Kuhns is the real deal! You are invited to his coming out party vs Dunbar.

I believe that Smith and crew will continue to build this thing brick by and I do not think that they are open to just jumping into 3A without the equal enrollment numbers to satisfy the peanut gallery. I do think that Dunbar will play against tougher competition when there is a opening in our schedule. Again, it is a problem to play the IBE, MATH, NBC, ABC, TNT and other sister of the poor programs...but we can not avoid it...today! This season they are still fighting for a 2nd date outside of the first week to play out of state....my guess is they will not let us drop one of the little sisters.....which is a shame...#haters

I believe as GC, CH and Gilman beat elite national powers and we can get 2 open dates schedule our own in state powers and one add'l power.

I agree GA. I know you guys are getting a lot of love from UA and getting a new stadium, but the talk about being a national power is getting a little ridculous. You are a 1A power and maybe a state power, so like GA said become a state power first. Yes you have many championships, most of them in the 1A. You also have a few in 2A and 3A but high school football was much different in the mid to late 90s as far as dedication, year round training etc. You keep saying about how Dunbar has low boy enrollment but almost every boy in the school is an athlete that has citywide selection and county selection with a low tuition.

I think Dunbar has a great tradition but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

A significant factor in CHC this year is the young QB leadership abilities. Can he get comfortable with this group of kids and will they respond to him. Tommy owned his team and those guys would died for him.

    Vision

    a. The faculty of sight; eyesight: poor vision.
    b. Something that is or has been seen.

“A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.”

Outside you know that hundreds of years ago dumb asse$ thought the world was flat because they had no vision.....

No Outside we must get ahead. I believe that your perspective is the mindset that has been the problem with Baltimore football....where they have never gotten ahead in their thought to elevate the football team to a program mentality until present. In addition many never raise that elevation from great program in the area to the state, to make eventually make the move to regional to national. Outside yes we are a 1A power, but we are also a state power. You must respect our resume. Football is football and the times are all relative. My evaluation is that if Dunbar were 2A,3A,4A every year for the last 6 years, I believe that we could have competed very well in every classification 4 of the 6 years, and we could have competed very well in 2A every year for the last 6 years span.

We will continue to push the bar and I believe that in the next 5 years with the pieces that we have in place and growing, we will be a program with a national presence.

They will be the best dressed, most talented, and have the best field in the city. Congrats on the deal. I hope that Harford County who turned Aberdeen down in their attempt to improve their field in a similar fashion will take notice. Howard County has also stopped such inside, inequitable deals from going through. With the exception of Woodlawn, Balt. County has also stopped this type of thing. Since the city has never attempted to create an even playing field this will not be an issue. Will this be a regional/shared home field like Greenway or just Eastside Prep's.

With City sporting a new field as well as Mervo already having a field I dont see it being shared.
