The nerve of those little Italian kids waving American Flags! This is America! They should only be allowed to wave American flags!

    Multiculturalism run amuck!

Absolutely...back when Baltimore was actually a civil place to work and live. Del. Pat McDonough hit the nail on the head. Anyone who disagrees hasn't been paying attention.

    The '70s eh?

Let's see. If I recall correctly, that's when the 'frightening aura' was caused by soul concerts and other 'black events' at the Civic Center, later to shift the cause to the overflow from crowds @ the Discos and clubs. Next came Hip Hop and now it's "flash mobs".

The 'mean dogs' were German Sheppards and Great Danes. Later it would be Rottweilers, now pit bulls.

In the 70's, powder cocaine was just starting to spread through suburbia and though it was 'the rich man's drug" it did lead to the inexpensive 'crack cocaine' which played it's part in developing the frightening experience. Of course, in urban areas Heroin was as much of a problem then as anything around today.

There's nothing new under the sun.

I used to go to the Polish festivals. Lots of fun and good food. Also a chance to pick up some Polish arts & crafts to decorate the home. But, being 3/4 Pole, it all has special meaning to me. My wife & I also hit the German, Irish and Italian festivals at least once each.

The Polish Festival used to be a lot of fun. They don't have it any longer. The City charged too much and most of the people moved away.

Baltimore in the 70s was utter crap. This is just an example of deluded and faded memories. Downtown was nasty, there was no inner harbor development, white flight out of the city was rampant, pollution and smog, endless backups at the Harbor Tunnel, and little Italy was surrounded by the high-rise projects.

Harbor Place had already been built, so was the Science Center. I believe that the Aquarium was under construction.
people could go to the Inner Harbor and enjoy themselves.

White flight started in the '50s, not because of racism, but because the city taxes were so high. The "block busting" phenomenon came a bit later.

Were you even in Baltimore in the '70s?

WRONG! I was born in 74 and I remeber going to Harborplace's opening with the fam when I was 6 in 1980... No science center either...believed that opened in 82...I remember them raising money for the aquarium... they had some sort of Rash Field festival.. I wanted to take the Pepsi Challenge, but the lady said I was too young. My mom was like "What? Is it spiked or something?"

    Man.. where did time go

I miss the city fair, but honestly woth kids nowadays it mught get "mobbed"..although we have tons of other events that they don't bother. I don't understand how they decide what events to show up at or not...
