    Gilly,

Does Gilman have an archives? I'm pretty sure St. Paul's and BL do, and Loyola should have one as well.

If those 4 schools and McDonogh all have decently complete archives, you could probably pull together a pretty complete history of the MSA, at least as far as it comes to schedules and championships.

It's a shame record keeping was so bad because some of these schools would probably be near the top of the national lists for most wins in several sports with as long as they have been playing. McD football goes back to the 1880s and baseball back to the 1870s, and I'm sure City and Poly both started playing those sports around the same time.

If there was ever a Msa a school that got tore to hell by Bcc and Poly it was Mcdonogh..even in the sablehause years, Bcc gave the eagles running clocks...in Sablehause senior year, the Knights beat them 55-0

You are kidding right? I believe in his senior they were ranked preseason number 1 in the merto and an early loss to Potomac knocked them out and put Patterson atop the poll. I cant imagine BCC beating McD like that with SH, Badham and Stukes on offense.

McDonogh was in the MSA B from about the start of the MSA B until the mid/late 80s so there wasn't much time when they were even playing City/Poly. McDonogh did have a few championships in the late 80s/early 90s. They had an undefeated season Sabelhaus's junior year.

Of course, considering McDonogh had less than 200 (probably closer to 150) boys in the Upper School at that time, it should come as no surprise that schools like City/Poly with more than 10x McD's enrollment could beat them badly and frequently. All things being even, a school with 2,000 boys to draw from should beat a school with 150 boys almost every time. Dom told me when he took over the program in '95 (Sabelhaus's senior year and after the collapse of the MSA), he had 27 players in the entire football program.

Also, the program was in turmoil Sabelhaus's senior year. Dick Working's sons had just been expelled after some stuff had happened the past spring. Working left and Bobby had a hard time picking up Dom's offense.

If they beat Poly in 88' they definitely weren't outright champs. They would have shared it with Poly but I was pretty sure Poly still won that Championship because City wasn't undefeated. There was no head to head tie breaker back then.
City was definitely not undefeated in '88. They lost to Calvert Hall that year and in '89... and in '90. They did get us my senior season when were #1 and City was #2 going into the game. That game was a real slobber-knocker. Both teams combined for around 20 total passes. All 3 TD's in the game were scored within a 7 minute stretch. One came two plays after the only turnover of the game. I'll never forget hearing the City crowd chanting "you're #2" in the 4th Quarter. Suber was the City's marquee player in the game, but their RB killed us. I think his name was Lymon.

Many, many schools floated back and forth between the MSA A & B Conferences. I know McDonogh was in the A my 1st two years of HS and they dropped to the B my last two years of HS and came back up to the MSA A the following season. That year ('92) was the last season the publics competed in the MSA. The MIAA was formed a few years later in 1995. The MIAA Lake Clifton, Edmondson and Forest Park were in the A conference my last 2 yrs, but Dunbar and McDonogh were not. I believe CHC, MSJ, Loyola, & Poly are the only schools that were in the A conference for the entire history of the MSA.

I don't think City was ever in the B conference, we were independent when I was in school. I could be wrong but it would have been only '86 and '87.

This is exactly why we need a MSA archives. I wasn't here in the late 80's and the only City Poly game I saw was that classic in '87.

I'm pretty sure that '93 (Sabelhaus' Junior Year) was McD's only championship in the late 80s/early 90s.

I'm pretty sure they were B in 87' my freshmen year. They definitely weren't back in the A conference until 88', that I will remember. They might have played independent but dont think so. Will never forget that game we played against City. Eric Brown almost took my man Ed Trusty's head off that game! Was knw of the nastiest hits I have ever seen in high school.

We absolutely need an archivist. The crazy part is, there is basically no information on Bmore sports pre MIAA and the city schools joing the state association. Not even all metro teams.

Your probably right, I was in lower/middle school at the time, so I don't have the best recollection from that period.

TRUE...Bcc lost to both Dunbar and CHC within the first 3 games of the season then something happened and they went crazy...from there they averaged 50 some points a game and destroyed Gibbons 55-0, Mcdonogh 56-0, St Joes 47-0, with victories over Loyola , Gilman and Poly...they ended up winning the A title outright at 8-2.
