Polarized voting - I would say this is a surprise, but it's not in this context.
Two things:
1. only 40 percent of the eligible vote came out...hmm
2. the two head candidates don't even represent the 50 percent of the vote that turned out (49%).

To me, this means they should do a recall, and re-vote.

Run-offs are common in a parliamentary democracy.

This should be interesting. The election will be decided by the voters who backed the more liberal and secular candidates. Will they hold their noses and vote for the Brotherhood because of their distaste for anything associated with the former Mubarak regime? Or, will they hold their noses and vote for the Mubarak candidate to avoid empowering an Islamist party with dubious claims of moderation.

The Coptics will vote Safiq. Hopefully, the liberals will swallow their disappointment and do the same.
