The Washington region has 86 football playing schools, the Baltimore region has 81 football playing schools, the overlap region (meaning Howard and Anne Arundel) has 28 school and 34 schools are in neither region.

For the upcoming 2012 season, one could rank the Top 100 teams and assign 100 points to the #1 team, 99 points to the #2 team ... 1 point for the #100 team. If one then totaled up the points for each region it would look an awful lot like this :

2352 Washington area (43 teams in the Top 100)
1298 Baltimore area (28 teams in the Top 100)
    947 Howard/Anne Arundel (19 teams in the Top 100)
453 Other (10 teams in the Top 100)

Clearly, on this scale, there's little doubt which region has the most good teams.

One could also produce a preseason All-State team of the Top 250 players for the upcoming 2012 season and similarly divide them among the 4 regions.

    111 Washington area
    69 Baltimore area
    35 Howard/Anne Arundel
    35 Other

Clearly, on this scale, there's little doubt which region has the most good players.
Exactly what constitutes the Washington DC area? I could argue Anne Arundel and Howard County belong in the Baltimore area.

The Washigton Post ranks Aa and Hoco teams in their Poll but they shouldn't. Especially not AA county. Not sure how they consider them in the Washington Area.

JMT always uses the Post to organize his area rankings. We've argued over this in the past. It's no wonder that Balto. gets beat out when you give D.C. AA and Ho. Cos.

AA County is a higher income base. They can sell them papers. Hence the adoption.

Excluding Howard and Anne Arundel Counties I count over 140 schools that play football in the DC area http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv...directory.html

Default Stop Relying on the Washington Post

JMT is biased about Washington DC Metro football. If he stop's using the Post's rankings then Baltimore football is better than DC football.

According to the US Office of Budget & Management (OMB), the Baltimore Metropolitan Statistical Area includes Baltimore City & County, Anne Arundel, Carroll, Harford, Howard and Queen Anne's counties. Based on this, top programs in Howard & Anne Arundel counties push Baltimore over the top.

Neither area can compare to the talent rich areas of So. Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. See for yourselves each & every Friday nite on the U this coming Fall. Not even close.

We've already had this discussion many times before and it comes down to what you're comparing. First off you would have to combine both areas since you're mentioning states. I think we found out that we don't have the overall population to match those states team for team but if you look at per capita we stack up pretty well especially when it comes to putting kids in college.
