Default Who In Your Opinion Was The Greatest Player To Win A Game In The Last Chance

We all know about Johnny Unitas and his two minute drill. John Elway and let us not forget Jim Palmer in baseball to pitch the last game that meant a championship. We saw the Bobby Orrs and Magic Johnsons. We all knew of a local star in a sport to take the last shot. James in basketball is good for 47 minutes but would you bet on the 48th?

No in my opinion there was no one as great as Michael Jordan. He not only won big games but did them with fevers and actually wanted the ball in every close game. Johnny Unitas was a close second in my opinion but it took someone else to catch the ball for him to succeed. Jordan was all by himself in that last minute of a big game. What do you think.

Joe Montana was the best I ever saw (but keep in mind I'm not a big Basketball fan and know very little about Hockey)

Vinny Testaverde was the worst I ever saw. His ability totally lose a game in the final 4 minutes, as well as lose big games was legendary.

Eli Manning has won 2 Super Bowl's in the last minute of the game against a team people felt was superior.

Not an easy thing here. The games are all different.

First basketball is different then it was in the 50's and 60's. The game was changed and it favored MJ. There was a more friendly to the offense game by MJ's time. NO ZONE D, for example. The clock and such. And MJ, as good as he was, did not inbound to himself dribble up court and play against 5 by himself. However the NBA is more of a one on one game then any other pro game.

I would think Bill Russel was the best for he never really had to make the last second shot, he would never let it be that close.

Even football has changed to help offense. So to compare a Johnny U to a Montana to an Elway to a Manning is not apples to apples.

Mike Lombardi in the top 100 of all time gave Johnny U a score of 7. That is ave. Or a C. His reason was that Johnny U could not compete in this era, while the Greats of today could have then. REALLY Mike. Well I could see a Brady melt down tantrum and ground slap in say 67. Yes sports fans in 67 there were NO SKIRTS on QB's. Deacon Jones would have killed Brady on EVERY PLAY. The Whistle was not "always" the end of the play in that time. Played through not to.

I think Lombardi is full of ...you know. But you may have at least found the two sports where last second plays are at the forefront of sport. I would think a walk off home run or hit would be there also. A baseball closer as well. But we are back to Apples to Apples and a bunch of mixed fruit.

I like my star slow and steady, clutch when needed and explosive when necessary, Brooks Robinson meets the criteria. He may not have hit lots of HR but he was the best clutch hitter I have seen and of course his abiity at third base is legendary. Brooks Robinson, a classy man on and off the field and there whenever we needed him.

I say Michael for one reason and one reason only. Until this time you never heard of one person wanting the ball in the last minute. Sure you heard of the 2 minute warning, the pitchers who won a big game but no one until Michael ever had the nerve to say, "it is on me" give me the ball and I will win it for you. MJ did this many times, he wasn't called a braggert but everyone said,"he did it". A guy with a 104 temp took his team on his shoulder in one game and did it, another time with his team way down he just took over. Namath said they would win SB3 but did he actually think it and if not for what many think was a rigged game. He would have been known as a blow hard as many still believe he was. Palmer in 82 had the ball and lost the big game against the Brew Crew but won the big game in 66. The difference was that Palmer was in there because it was his turn. How many pitchers said give me the ball and I will win the game after they pitched the day before etc. No MJ just changed the game. He made every supper star take notice and as we see today. If you want to be known as a Supper Star ,you better make that last shot. I think the closest to MJ is Tiger. Unlike a team sport he needs to be at his best all the time but he has made the game of golf take notice that you must work out to contend. Now all great golfers are in the gym.

Against Utah, on the road, first he stole the ball from Karl Malone then dribbled all the way to the other end and drove for a basket that cut the three point deficit to one. On the next play, he actually did rebound the missed shot and took it up the floor on his own to sink a jump shot from the foul line to put the Bulls ahead for good. When he needed to...

When it came to basketball and Jordan, there were so many ways he could make sure the winning basket was made (against Phoenix twice, he drove to the basket then passed to Paxson once then Kerr another time) for easy three-pointers to win games.

I think you missed the 40 to 60 minutes before this! As Don Shula once said after he was told that Gail Sayers was a one man team. " I'll put 8 Colts and 3 little old ladies against Sayers any day. Sayers will not make a yard. He has 10 other guys that make the holes for him to run through." That is my point. Team games are never won alone. Even if you just need a body to make the minimum so the game can start. It is a team game.

When you look at the Cletics, before Russel nothing, once he was in Green they won back to back to back to back... 7 in a row and 10 of 13.

'Gail Sayers?' Is that Gale's daughter or something?

Basketball is different in the modern era...if you watch games, it is usually one-on-one isolation moves nearly every time.

There were 46 or so minutes before Jordan took over, but Jordan starred in those minutes too. He imposed his will on the other team, no matter who they tapped to guard him.

Russell was a great player, but so were Havlichek, Cousey, Jones and the others...plus there were fewer teams back then - unlike today when every team seems to have one or two superstar-quality guys!

I do think the only one in the game of hockey that I think could take control was Bobby Orr but I have seen GK's who play their hearts out in big games.

It has a point, and if it keeps its hat on, no one will notice.
