They acted like they thrilled just to have qualified for the tournament. One of the players scalded their fans for that thinking. But I disagree, Ireland will never be able to compete with Italy, Spain, or Germany, they just don't have the population base or resources.

Balotelli, with an incredible goal, but what a head case, who the hell was he yelling at after he scored, good thing his buddies were covering his mouth, poor Croatia, wow 89th minute. The best game I've seen, at least the most exciting was England v Sweden, 3 lead changes!! The germans are still my pick, The Dutch implode as usual.

My Heritage is half italian and half irish, dutch, german. So if it's not the US I root for the Azzuri, but the other side of my family is looking good, The Germans got the easiest first round game and I just think they have looked the best in the tourney so far.

Most of us Americans are mutts... Ukraine got screwed out of a goal, which makes France face Spain, instead of Italy in the quarterfinals.

as expected, portugal moves on ......

germany should do the same today ......

really don't expect any surprises in the 1st 3 quarterfinals ......

my guess is that if england beats the enigmatic azzurri I guess that would be as close to an upset as we will see in this round .....

    huge mismatch today .......

couldn't believe it was actually tied 1-1 in the second half ......

towards the end, germany could have scored a few more but they called off the dogs ......

Anyone watching Italy-Germany tomorrow*? I know there was a group meeting at Ryan's Daughter for that purpose this afternoon. Wish I could be there.

Great day today and Italia delivered on the upset ........

I watched the game in canada in a city with a strong italian presence .........

after the games there were folks marching around downtown with italian flags and cars driving up and down the street with italian flags out the windows and sunroofs blowing their horns .....

it was just a couple hundred people but it was a lot of fun .....

when I watched the euro in italy in 2008 they lost in the quarterfinals so I never got to see real insanity over there .......

Wow, super mario came to play, taking the shirt off was typically boneheaded, but I guess it doesn't matter with one game left, I really though germany was going to take it all, now finish the job, spain is painful to watch.

Spain was dominant, yet had to rely on what is basically a coin-flip in winning the shootout against Portugal.

I'd like to see them come up with something other then a shootout to decide the winner in a knockout stage.. Maybe 7 on 7 football for 15 minutes?
