    Default Deja vu for Heap

    Looks like he's about to again get released so that a young TE can take his spot.

    I think it would be sort of cool if he would be willing to come back as the #2 / #3 for a year or two on a minimum deal. That of course is assuming that Arizona does release him, nobody else gives him more money / a better opportunity, and he'd be willing to keep playing in that role... all big assumptions.

    I remember this forum exploding when the Ravens cut Heap, Mason & Gregg. All the usual forum suspects prophesized DOOM because our front office "did not know what they were doing." The Ozzie bashers were extremely fierce and out in full force that day.

    Nearly a year later - not a peep.

    Mason - retired after bouncing between two teams w/ little substantive contribution. His absence gave Torrey a chance to develop at a much lower price;

    Heap - often injured, decreased production and about to be released; his absence gave Dennis Pitta a chance to develop at a much lower price;

    Gregg - Had a solid year at KC, but his production was matched by Terrence Cody; who got a chance for development at - you guessed it - at a much lower price

    Maybe, just maybe, the front office and coaching staff that handle salary cap parameters, and day-to-day practice observations, have a bit better handle on player personnel than the internet tough guys roaming this board.

    As an aside – Heap is an all time great and one of my favorite Ravens, but in today’s salary cap NFL it is hard to be sentimental. There will be some hard cuts this year on every team. It happens. If you sign Heap for sentimentality – who might you let go to provide his roster spot? Given his history of injury and concussions – I’d actually like to see Heap call it a career.

    Is he Ring oof Honor worthy?

    If he decides to retire, I'd like to see him do what Mason did. I sure wish both of them could have gotten a ring while here.

    I think he's as big of a lock to get his name hung in the stadium as Ray Lewis and Ed Reed are. Zero chance they don't honor him that way. And I think there's about zero chance that he doesn't sign a one day contract here (whenever the end DOES come for him) to retire as a Raven, regardless of what happens with him over the next few months or years.

    This^ for sure. As for being released, Heap is too much a pro not to get the picture and deal with it. A guy with his class will be a success in whatever he does after his time on the field is through.
