    Howard 21
    Atholton 7

Someone had to take a shot at predicting this one. I see this game as being a tough one, but I see Atholton's offense struggling like they did against Wilde Lake. Anderson will break loose for at least one long touchdown. I hope to make it out to this game.

Where will the OM QB play next year? The last time OM had a very good player he popped up at The River Hill School for wayward boys the next year. Little RB, can't remember his name.

I respectfully disagree. This game will be a breakout performance for Atholton's QB, he may even have an offer or two in the upcoming weeks.

That must be too far back for me to recall..
But what I do remember is OM being the last jv team to beat RH, and they did it with 2 big receivers. One by the name of Greg Whittington i believe. As you can see it never led to varsity wins..in football at least! I also don't know if beating this year lil Hawks is as big as a accomplishment, as I do think the feat will be repeated a few times this year.

Bold, 3 touchdown victory for a team that has a 5 point differential against 1, if not 2, very mediocre teams so far.

This will be a good one to see!

Last week was my worst week thus far. But as the master of Howard County Football, I still have a good record of 12-2. Things are starting to come into focus of who is a contender and who is a pretender.

    Marriotts Ridge (1 - 2 ) vs. Mt. Hebron (3 - 0)
The streak is over! After some very long years Marriotts Ridge has finally won a game. The team crushed Oakland Mills in their early homecoming game this year scoring the most points (41) in some time. The kids and coaches deserve this, they play hard week after week and I for one am very happy for the Mustangs. Mount Hebron is the surprise team in this league. They have had some things break their way in the first 3 weeks, but talent and coaching so far seem like the real deal. They play a vanilla Offense and while they are not the biggest team on D they play fast and hard. I would love to pick MR, but I’m officially drinking the Viking Kol-Aid.

    Mount Hebron 35
    Marriotts Ridge 7

    Wilde Lake (1 - 2 ) vs. Oakland Mills (0 - 3 )

10-15 years ago this was the most heated rivalry in the county. Each school hated each other as they battled for Columbia supremacy. The rivalry has died down as OM has become a very poor program. And OM has shown (as of this week) they are the worst team in the league. Not much else left to say about this once proud program. Wilde Lake is not exactly lighting the world on fire either. They have one of the worst Offenses in the league. Wilde Lake is use to having exceptional athletes and large lineman. They have 1 large lineman and no exceptional athletes on the O. Hard to imagine they won a state championship 2 years ago. After a shelling from Hebron, Wilde Lake could not have picked a better opponent to play in the following week. The Wild Cats try to turn their season around before they get buried in the point standings, and this is the time to start.

    Wilde Lake 28
    Oakland Mills 0

    Hammond (1 - 2) vs. River Hill (3 - 0 )

Very few schools in the state of Maryland have been as dominate as the River Hill Hawks. They lead the league in points and points allowed and it’s not close. They have so many ways to score, and if they can keep up the passing success than the sky is the limit. To be fair though they have played a very easy schedule (1-8 combined record), and this will be their toughest opponent. Hammond had a tough loss the last two weeks. The ground and pound is not going very well with their small lineman and small RB. If Hammond loses this game it would be very difficult for Hammond to make the playoffs at this point with remaining games against Atholton and Howard. I think Hammond will be outside looking in when it’s all said and done. Another little nugget in this game is Hammond beat River Hill last year and started the talk that RH was done (lead by me), and I’m sure RH is not forgetting that game.

    River Hill 35
    Hammond 14

    Long Reach (0 - 3) vs. Atholton (3 - 0 )

There isn’t a game this week in which two teams could be any different. Atholton had the huge come from behind win against Howard last week. Atholton has excellent coaching and what looks like the MVP of the league. As long as the Atholton QB is on the field they are a very good team. Long Reach seems like they gave up in the beat-down Glenelg gave them last week. The hope is the coaching staff from LR can keep the kids from not giving up on the season. And with what Atholton well do to them tomorrow it will become even harder on the coaches. Atholton wins huge this week.

    Atholton 49
    Long Reach 0

    Glenelg (2 - 1 ) vs. Reservoir (1 - 2 )

I think this will be a very good game. Both teams have some momentum after big wins last week. Before the season Glenelg was a league favorite and is now flying under the radar after their week 1 loss to Howard. Beating Hammond and Long Reach convincingly will get people’s attention though. Stopping a very dynamic O will be Reservoir’s biggest challenge in this game. Reservoir has a very difficult schedule remaining (River Hill, Howard, and Atholton) and going 1-3 into those games would most likely put an end to the Gators playoff hopes. My favorite player in the county though is the FB for Resi; he is huge and fast and just brings a smile to my face when he is in the open field with the ball. Reservoir has played tight games all year and it won’t stop here

    Glenelg 28
    Reservoir 21

    Howard (2 - 1 ) vs. Centennial (1 - 2)

Both teams had tough weeks last week. Howard lost a huge lead against Atholton and fell a foot short of the victory on a 2 pt. conversion that would have given the Lions the win. Centennial had one of the worst loses in Howard County history. The Eagles will have their homecoming game this week and would like nothing more than show their fans a good game, maybe they should have scheduled someone else than. The starting QB is not playing in this game for Centennial and will now depend even more on the Junior RB Fletcher. While Howard had a very tough loss, they are still one of the top teams in the league. 2nd best O in the league and it’s safe to say Howard will want to avenge the hard loss from last week. RB Anderson is the best RB in the league and has over 100 yds. and 2 TD’s ever game. As always I do not pick Howard games.

    Default hammond struggling?

Ive seen less than 10 high school games the last ten years. Ive been to all 3 marriots ridge games this year

On opening nite i was vey impressed by MR JONES I knew he would be good but he was better than expected. On defense they had good overall team speed closed to the ball very well. So I am suprised to see them struggling.

Would those that have seen more games have better knowledge educate me

did the new astro turf field make them look faster better than they really are?

On another note i think the offensive player of the year race is going to be very intersting. Mr jones looked very good Mr anderson looked very good the atholton qb is also in the mix and probably some others that i dont know about yet If i had a vote and had to vote today i would vote for Mr Jones
(sorry o-line thats just how i see it lol)

Long Reach moved the ball pretty well on RH. I'm not shocked they beat Ath. based on the way Ath. has been winning games. It's looking more like Atholton might be lucky they're not 0-4. When a coach labels his team "Cardiac Kids" you know he's losing sleep. He'll lose some more sleep tonight.

Big Sky - Sounds like you have a lot of respect for the great Coach Moo. I'm guessing coach Moo knows a little bit more about HS football in the state of MD than you, me and GA put together. Coach Moo has seen "That Offense" up close and personal for the fourth time. Ask Old Time to ask Coach Moo if he thinks RH could score on that great Gilman defense. That would settle the argument for me. Thanks.

Mr. Jones was impressive vs. RH on offense and special teams. He runs hard and when he breaks himself free Look Out! Like Long Reach, Hammond was successful running the football on the RH defense. All of their scores were on the RH A-Team. Also Like LR, Hammond could not even slow down the RH offense. After 4 games the identity of the RH punter is still a mystery. Based on my observations (and I'm no GA) Hammond is the best team RH has seen this year. They might be better than their record.

Does the less than dominant Hawks defense and kickoff team worry you?

The fact that the Hawks are passing often this year makes the offense hard to stop. I'd like to see the defense step it up. Down the road there could always be that day where the weather is too tough to throw, plus an off day with a couple of fumbles, and soon the defense is in a position that they need to win the game. I've already seen the defense make some big plays, just like to see them play a little more solid.

Last week was not a great week. I claimed to be the Hoco expert with what was a great record. Well I might not be an expert, but it is easy to see that Hoco is the toughest public school league in the state. That is not arguable. I’m still doing pretty well (15-4) and I will hope to improve this week with some very good games on the schedule.

    Wilde Lake (2 - 2 ) vs. Reservoir (2 - 2 )

Both teams had to win last week, and they did. Wilde Lake blew out Oakland Mills and Reservoir shocked Glenelg. The season will be half-way over after this Saturday afternoon and this is the time to start building your playoff resume. Last week was important, this week is essential. Reservoir had a big D performance shutting down on of the more difficult O’s to cover last week. They showed they have a lot of athletes and toughness as a team. They will need to prove last week was not a fluke and beat a hungry Wilde Cat team. The green and yellow team from Columbia finally came out from under the rock they have been hiding under the first 3 weeks. Wilde Lake has an excellent D with LB Eric Handy controlling the middle of the field. It will be difficult for Resi to use their good run game with Handy playing at the level he is at. This is a tough game to call; both teams cannot afford to fall any further back in the playoff race. Not too confident with the pick, but I’m going with the Wilde Lake defense to slow down the Gators and figure out a way to get into the end zone a few times there selves.

    Wilde Lake 21
    Reservoir 14

    River Hill (4 - 0 ) vs. Glenelg (2 - 2 )

At the beginning of the year a lot of people (including me) penciled this as the Howard County Championship game. River Hill has held up their end of the deal. River Hill is crushing anything in their path. Reminds me of how General Sherman ran through the South during the Civil War (just because it’s a high school sports board does not mean it can’t be educational). River Hill is most likely the most impressive public school in the state to this point of the season. Although the D gave in a little bit last week against Hammond, it still is hard to find a game they won’t stumble. Glenelg is still a top team in the league with excellent coaching and good skill players. They ran into a tough Resi team that just had their number last week. Glenelg will be focused and inspired to be the first team to challenge the Hawks and to avenge the tough lost they had last year against River Hill. Not to mention Glenelg is also slipping in the standings for the playoffs. I can’t pick against the Hawks until I see them falter. I would not be surprised though if the Gladiators rise to the occasion and bring down the Evil Empire.

    River Hill 49
    Glenelg 28

    Howard (3-1) vs. Hammond (1 - 3 )

The last two years this game has been a play-in game for the playoffs. This game features the top two RB’s in the league in Jones from Hammond and Anderson from Howard. Hammond is in a tough 3 game losing streak and this is a must win if the Bears want to return to the playoffs. Hammond will need to play clean football with limited turnovers and penalties. They will try to slow down Anderson with an aggressive defense. The Lions will try to keep their high-flying offense (2nd in the league) rolling when the visit Hammond this Friday night. Howard also has lots of ways to attack teams, but the main guy to stop is RB Anderson who is averaging over 100 yds. and 2 td. a game. Expect this to be a tough, close, and high scoring game. As always I do not predict Howard games.

    Marriotts Ridge (1 - 3 ) vs. Long Reach (1 - 3 )

This could be a very interesting game to watch. Long Reach had the upset game of the state last week beating Atholton. I have been critical of Long Reach all year and they showed up and won what could be a season changing victory. The team has always had athletes and good LB’s, but it’s has just been whether or not they are but in the best position to succeed. As of last week they were. Marriots Ridge is never an easy out and with the new offense they are using they are now making teams play them for 48 min. They have a scrappy D lead by LB Luke Fugate (also a good track and field thrower in the spring). The Mustangs are very competitive in other sports throughout the year so that means the athletes are there. Their time will come, but not this week. Expect this to also be a quick game as both teams use very heavy run offenses. Too much size and speed for the Lighting to be stopped in this game though (sorry thunder road).

    Long Reach 35
    Marriots Ridge 14

    Oakland Mills (0 - 4 ) vs. Mt. Hebron (4 - 0 )

This will be the most lopsided game of the week. Hebron is the surprise of the state. Exceptional weapons on O and athletes on D. There are many ways to score for this team with QB Gilmore, RB Jackson, and WR Nicolas. To be fair though this team has not really played a “power house” team yet. And their easy schedule will continue with what will be their easiest game all year. Oakland Mills is bad. Really Bad. I don’t have much else to say. The team is loaded with tradition and athletes, but they need something to turn them around. It’s hard to see a W anywhere on the schedule. Like I said this game is going to get bad and fast.

    Mount Hebron 49
    Oakland Mills 0

    Centennial (1 - 3 ) vs. Atholton (3 - 1 )
This game will be closer than most people think so. Atholton had a bad loss last week against winless Long Reach. Atholton has played close tough games and had a few things bounce their way to keep their record spot-less. The bounces finally bounced the other way. Atholton still should be favored in most of their remaining games, but they cannot fall again or they might have to visit Howard again or play River Hill in the first round of the play-offs. Neither situation is ideal. Centennial played a tough game against Howard forcing three turnovers and winning the time of possession. RB Walter Jones is a tough and talented player and is the heart and soul of the team. The Eagles are still without their starting QB from the beginning of the year, and they tried many different QB’s to fill the void, but had a tough time through the air against the Lions. Centennial could not have picked a worst time to play Atholton. It’s Atholton’s homecoming and just were handed their first lost. Atholton rolls in this game

    Atholton 35
    Centennial 7
