Worried about distracted motorists, transportation officials plan to halt traffic on the Bay Bridge for about 40 minutes Wednesday afternoon as a giant cargo boat carrying shipping cranes passes beneath the bridge. Officials tentatively expect traffic to be stopped starting at 1:15 p.m.

I think I'll cruise out of annapolis harbor tomorrow to check them out as they come up the bay.

Another view is that they know that some butt-brained rubbernecker (you, perhaps?) just might get some other innocent person killed and they would like to avoid that outcome.

I only got to see the headlines and was scratching my head wondering why they would have to close the bridge, I mean as long as the thing fits under the bridge, what could be the issue?

Well, at least now I know--- but I have mixed feelings, on one hand, seems excessive to close the bridge, but on the other, imagine the lawsuits ahould an accident happen--- shoot you might even have an "on-purpose accident" once they raised the spectre--- I guess for a one time, unique event, its better to be safe than sorry.

Not sure what the temp has to do with it...but it's not the ship thats the distraction, it's the cranes that will barely fit under the bridge (less than ten feet clearance) that certainly will cause drivers to be distracted. Much as I hate it, the decision was made by someone that understands traffic. The cruise ships cause people to drive stupid. Theres a rear end collision on the bridge a few times a month, because some drivers are enjoying the view, not paying attention.

Helluva backup on US-50 eastbound at the bay bridge. I pity those poor souls. The ship seemed about a half hour behind the previously announced 115pm to pass under the bridge.

But how often do you see cars overheating anymore? This intentional delay is no different from the delays that happen weekly on these roads due to accidents, as far as the cars go. I know, I've been doing this commute for about 26 years.
