New Practice Regulations

So MPSAA has just out into effect new practice regualtions in an effort to help the athletes battle the heat.

Here is the lowdown...

-No more back to back two-a-days
-No contact for football players until the 5th day of practice
-No Shoulder pads until practice 3 and no lowers until practice 5
-3 hour practice limit
-No interpertation about adjusting if the weather is not too hot

This is a significant rule because it affects scrimmages, and the development of the team. Football is a contact sport and you can only form tackle so much. My biggest problem with this is it is now essentially up to the counties to regulate and enforce these new rules. Giving teams and counties that choose to "look away" a huge head start and advantge over those who follow the rules.

according to this document these are just suggested guidelines for consideration not rules.. common sense should always prevail though..

Directly from the MPSSAA Policy: Each school system is encouraged to carefully consider this model policy when formulating specific guidelines for acclimatization of student-athletes to warm weather conditions.

Some counties will take this information to be law while other counties will develop their own policies. The result is a different standard, much like you have in practice rules for other sports!

Unfortunately you have some out there that do not use common sense in the matters so the government has gotten involved to protect us from ourselves, AGAIN!

Voted on last week. And yes, this is the states way of making up for poor decisions by adults.

If you are going to respond to my post, at least read. Yes, prevention of a youth's death is the ultimate punishment. But what should happen to coaches who don't follow this mandate and put kids in this dangerous situation? You have coaches who don't follow other rules regarding practice already.

If this is a mandate than that coach should be fired!!!!! I don't care how good they are the saftey and health of kids comes first!

As long as "self reporting" is the rule than very little will change. Who has the stop watch on those practices? Colleges have been getting around these rules forever. My fav is when the don't call a practice a practice but give it another name.

This really won't be much of a shake up for McD. The first week is equal if not more time in the meeting rooms than on the practice fields, they almost never go full pads and/or full contact and they only have 4 2-a-days.

Of course, Dom has seen this coming for years, he's just been ahead of the curve in adopting the modern practice type.

I wonder how long until the old school coaches start clamoring for indoor facilities to get around these practice rules.

Not sure if indoor practices will be in the budget anytime some.

AD's will be under the most stress because they will be the ones to report any wrong doing. And I would guess they will also be the ones in charge of keeping time. That way more responsiblities will be on them and hopefully they will hold their own coaches accountable.

The most interesting thing about this is how hard MPSAA will come down the first affender (and there will def be an affender this year). They have to come down real hard to show they mean buisness otherwise this rule will be broken by everyone.
