According to today's Washington Post, the following sports have been eliminated at Maryland:
- men' sswimming
- woman's swimming
- woman's water polo
- gymnastics/rythmics/dance/whatever it's called these days
- men indoor track
- woman indoor track
....surviving (they apparently raised enough money in this Olympic year) was (outdoor) track....but this too could be gone in a few years.
While I hate to see any program eliminated, if these programs can't be self-supporting because the students/fans aren't interested enough to attend events...then why have them? Really, what is the purpose of having sports that few are interested in? Most of these sporting events are simply entertainment for the rest of the student body...and if the student body is ambivilent, then why keep them?
