Default 6 NCAA sports officially terminated at UMd

According to today's Washington Post, the following sports have been eliminated at Maryland:

    - men' sswimming
    - woman's swimming
    - woman's water polo
    - gymnastics/rythmics/dance/whatever it's called these days
    - men indoor track
    - woman indoor track

....surviving (they apparently raised enough money in this Olympic year) was (outdoor) track....but this too could be gone in a few years.

While I hate to see any program eliminated, if these programs can't be self-supporting because the students/fans aren't interested enough to attend events...then why have them? Really, what is the purpose of having sports that few are interested in? Most of these sporting events are simply entertainment for the rest of the student body...and if the student body is ambivilent, then why keep them?

For the most part student/athletes in these sports a generally "high-B-to-A" students.
Why does MD have the money to give discount rates to Illegals but not enough money to help high-achieving local students whose parents have paid a couple decades worth of Federal, State and maybe Local taxes ?

,,,and then we admit all those out of state students from NY and NJ. Seriously, about every 3rd or 4th car I see near campus has either NJ or NY plates. They pay out of state tuition, so that helps the cash flow...but they do knock out quite a few in-state students from being admitted.

There are quite a few examples (I personally know a few) where perfectly qualified kids from in state were not admitted, or recieved deferred admission....to make room for more slots for out of state students (who pay more $$). So much for your tax dollars guarenteeing anything.

Because they are spending all of their money on their high-end programs, like football and basketball.

The truth is, much of the tuition problem in colleges can be attributed to expensive football, baseball, and basketball programs that don't bring in what they cost.

The only schools right now making money are the biggest schools, like the SEC and the top of the ACC, etc.

Wrong. The ACC is far from the richest. Even the Sec is not top dog.

Well just get rid of all the sports then. Sports scholarships should be eliminated and then they could still have all the sports. Put kids who actually want to go to college on the team. Problem sovled.
