I probably say this every year....

As a black American, I love the 4th of July. And I love the stories, the facts, the myths, and the legends about our nation's independance. It is a patriotic tale of freedom that I am an absolute sucker for, and there is no other time of year when I feel more patriotic.

As a practical matter, July 4th is important to all Americans regardless of race. Though equality wasn't really meant for everyone at the time, the Declaration of Independance started this nation on a path where former slaves and the decendants of slaves could one day hold this country to its promise of life, libery, and the pursuit of happiness.

Everything that lead to the Constitution is worth celebrating, IMO.

All that said, I thouroughy enjoy a good Juneteenth celebration as it IS American history. Juneteenth is by no means racist or separatist. Is a reminder that not all Americans were always free - even after "the Man" (Lincoln) said so. I would encourage white people to attend some of the major Juneteenth events.

Let's get very upset about things Comedians say, part umpteen-thousand.

Reading the linked comments, what was upsetting to me wasn't what a comedian said, it was the vile and vulgar and hateful comments of other people putting down America.

This is what happens when we stop teaching history in our schools. All those people lashing out at America for slavery don't realize that in that era, there were people held as slaves all over the world. That was the norm almost everywhere, and while it wasn't right -- then or now -- it's unrealistic to hold 18th century America to a different standard than the rest of the world.

This country has been atoning for slavery for decades. It's time for the great-great-great-great-great grandchildren of slaves to stop hating what was done several hundred years ago, and embrace the opportunities they have in this country today to make good lives for themselves.

Being angry, bitter, and resentful is not the way to succeed in life.

When I think about this country, I see the glass as half-full, not half-empty. It especially galls me when wealthy entertainers gripe about how "unfair" America is.

This country, for all its faults, is still the land of opportunity.

Agreed. Just like it's ridiculous to get upset about what talk radio hosts say as well, wouldn't you agree? They are both after the same thing, attention, ratings and money. So why do people get upset about either?
