I heard on MASN the O's are talking to the Twins about Liriano and Denard Span. I'm not sure how serious it is.

Denard Span would be a nice pickup to play left. But they really need starting pitchers, a third baseman, a first baseman and a second baseman.

the O's seem think with OFers in the minors, but I think Span provides that lead off type hitter with speed on the bases.

all they will do is look....I'd be surprised if they land a player who can have any real impact...I like span and headley, but real contenders will land these guys....then we can listen to the front office bemoan the high price of talent these days....

liriano and colon...they have a staff full of those guys already....

I still remember Beattie was smiling and shaking hands like he had just rooked the Reds and got Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas.

I'd like to say I accidentally hit the "P" key, but it's nowhere near the "M" key

He was actually the third base coach for St. Jean in 1902 in the old Provincial League in Quebec. I remember him well. As a kid, my ambition was to grow up and get a job as a third base coach and fortunately, that's one goal I failed to meet.

Sorry, but I cannot see the push to trade anybody for anybody as far as this year goes. One or two guys are not going to make playoff contenders out of a team with starting pitching in collapse, defense inconsistent at best, and mostly unable to string two hits together ever. If we could unload some unproductive players for guys who will make us better next year, fine, but as I saw someone say on a related thread, "Nobody is going to give you their treasure for your trash." Stay the course - there is hope, but it's not for this year.

Have you been paying attention - we are in playoff contention (as I so brilliantly predicted in March) and the starting pitching is doing fine.

It's about opportunity, 2013 possibilities and starting pitching potential.

It's easy to lambast the rotation but that's both cliche and in contrast to recent performance. Chen, Tillman, Britton and even Hunter have thrown well in recent starts. Matusz has performed mostly well at Norfolk, Arrieta too has undeniable talent, and Hammel is going to return in about 20 games.

There is enough potential and depth to hold out realistic hope for a late season performance surge from a rotation that is relatively well rested in comparison to the competition. The one area where there is no depth is in the infield. If the one or two guys acquired are a 2nd and 3rd baseman who can each provide .350 OBPs and a glove, 2012 could end on a positive note.

But, I know you prefer the wallowing in misery schtick.

Nah, I don't prefer wallowing in misery at all; I'm enjoying the Orioles' obvious progress and I think it bodes well for the future. I would love to see them surge down the stretch. I just don't want to see them give up players that will help next year when this team is not as talented as their competition this year. There is the possibility of them playing over their heads as a team, but to catch, defeat, and surpass the Yankees, Rays (I know the standings; I don't expect them to last), Rangers, Angels, etc. is expecting an awful lot.

i think you can add J Vargas to the list. Improved to 11-7, decent 4 or 5th starter.

I absolutely agree any additions in 2012 need to be done carefully to ensure no undue depletion of the limited minor league reserves. I also agree that any adds are not going to make much difference in the race this year. I just think one decent infielder added in trade for a combo of one of the AAA outfielders (Hoes/Avery), a starter with unachieved potential (Arrieta or Matusz) and a low level guy who is touted (Bridwell, Esposito or Shrader) but very much less than certain would ease the offseason job Duquette will need to do to revamp the infield.

That bounty should bring Wright (if the O's throw in MASN) and then they can sign Howie Kendrick this offseason to play second....... yeah right, that'll happen.

On a more realistic note though, I do think that package might attract Aaron Hill from AZ who has rebounded well this year. I think AZ owes us after we took ole iron glove and noodle stick off their hands. Hill can play 2nd now and if a miracle happens, he could slide to third for Roberts to return to 2nd next year.
