When one is running for president, it would be a benefit to release his financial records or be seen as having something to hide. Voters want to know as much as possible about each candidate to make an informed choice when they vote.
Most people don't care about school transcripts, birth certificates, or any hijinks that happened over 30 years ago. They don't care what they experimented in during their youth.
Most people do care about how presidential candidates handled their finances and/or whether they received special treatment in their taxes.
