Severe scoliosis is a very difficult problem to deal with since there are limited scoliosis treatment options. You can either just live with it or try and exercise based program like Scoliosis Boot Camp or opt to have surgery for scoliosis. You decide to do option C, surgery. However, just because you have scoliosis surgery does not mean that you are out of the woods. Later, you find out that your choice resulted in cancer. How?
Recent research suggests that the drug, Infuse, that is frequently used during scoliosis surgery to help to stimulate bone growth is causing people to get cancer!
What researchers are now realizing is that this drug can increase your risk of cancer by 250% in the first year! In the third year, it can increase your risk of cancer by 500%. Furthermore, what researchers are realizing is that as more time passes the increase rate keeps increasing.
The type of cancer that is linked to this drug is one of the ones that takes your life the quickest, pancreatic cancer. This cancer kills 20 percent of people within the first year and 96 percent within the first five years. The drug Infuse has also been linked to other cancers such as prostate and breast. So why is this drug being used?
The FDA approved the drug Infuse in lower amounts. However, that does not mean that the drug is being used properly. The truth is very little oversights exist in how often and to what extent Doctors use this drug while treating patients. Doctors are pretty much free/allowed to use Infuse as much as they want, whenever they want while treating the patient.
This despite findings of Doctor Eugene Carragee. Dr. Carragee noted that the FDA rejected the drug when being administered in larger quantities.
Considering the extent of usage of Infuse, a Hospital, was observed to have used it on 96 percent of the time in spinal fusion surgeries.
You may have heard of Infuse before because there are several articles out on the internet that reference it. I came across some information that quoted researchers saying the drug is completely safe. That said, I also noted that the parties making these assertions had a vested interest in the company. Whenever you look at a study and decide whether to heed its advice consider the source. Who did the study? Is it an independent study? Or is there a conflict of interest? Was it the manufacture of the drug? Manufacturers will always have a vested interest in making sure the supports their drug. Also likely is the possibility that the Company submits only those studies that had favorable outcomes or 'not so bad' outcomes, meanwhile rejecting those studies whose outcomes were not favorable.
What we do know about Infuse is that 50% of the people who receive it are at risk of side effects: unwanted bone growth, infection, bone loss, sterility in men, pain and Cancer.
If you plan on going for surgery for your scoliosis make sure you say no to Infuse!
