Weird-O, I fully support the principle that there's a direct correlation between a team's stupidity and the players and coaches they pass on. Examples abound where superstars are passed over for non-performing former Yankee bums.

This is a strange choice unless Peterson's demand were too high. Peterson appeared to be a shoo-in with Farrell hopefully for Farrell it is not Front Office/Owner interference already.

reports said Henry forced Cherington to bring in Valentine. I think he was humbled by the total embarrassment of that demand. He'll be laid back now. and I doubt Farrell would have left a mgr job to take a different mgr job where he couldn't pick his own staff.

Farrell did such a lousy job with Toronto that he likely ran off to Boston to get a fresh start with new ownership. His days were definitely numbered in Toronto and he knew it.

You're thinking human factors rather than meaningless stats and you're definitely on to something. By subtracting Valentine, the players have the necessary scapegoat for 2012 and it isn't them. Adding chicken and beer would be total vindication of Francona's pampering ways. If all this happens, the Red Sox not only make the playoffs in 2013 but get to the World Series.

To summarize, the difference between the playoffs and the World Series is chicken and beer.

A friend of mine that lives and breaths the Boston Red Sox (yes I have Boston friends), says that the choice of Nieves, that surprised most in Boston was in fact the choice of John Farrell.

Farrell and Nieves apparently were team mates when they pitched for San Juan in 1986 and have been close friends for 25+ years and the decision just came down to who Farrell felt most comfortable with. So it appears that Farrell basically does have the last say on who he selects as his coaches.

from what I keep hearing, Boston isn't planning on jumping into the market for any of the marque FAs this winter.

I find that hard to believe, but maybe they feel like NY's pattern of reducing payroll will allow them to do the same w/o the fans revolting.
