At one point I interjected to say that one of the Fox News stories was incomplete, and not factually accurate. You would have thought that I called one of their dear friends a criminal, liar and cheat. From that point on, I never opened my mouth, lest I be ejected from the home I grew up in. It was that bad.

During the flight home, my wife commented that she can now see why so many on the Right are as angry and hateful as they are....you would be too if this was where you got all your news and information from. In all fairness, some of the Fox News stories were informative...but the overwhelming majority of reports & commentary from Fox, Hannity, Rush, Laura Ingraham was just vicious bile.

I think the polarization of America will continue so long as people choose to get all their news from media sources that have little objectivity or impartiality.

You are what you eat...and will become what you watch/listen to.
I feel your pain My mom and most of my relatives are Fox News Zombies.

When 290 shows out of the year is dedicated to hate, hate, hate day in and day out. This does wonders to an uneducated mind. Here you go:

It may influence it to a degree, but the belief system of the recipient was already in place, otherwise you too would have been changed in your beliefs along with your wife.

Older folks, like my parents, don't get out much. TV is their only form of enertainment and connection to the outside world. That said, when you are bombarded with the same message over, and over and over again....you become a believer that what you are listening to, is, in fact, the truth. Once you become a believer in a particular form of message, you stop seeking other diverse forms of information...because, in your mind, these other media outlets only deliver lies. It's a self-perpetuating system.

That's the reality that my folks live in, and I suspect, the reality of a lot of Americans. It didn't use to be that way. My parents, for as long as I can remember, always watched CBS news. Now, not one second.

Much has been written about the "polarization of America".

I think it was Bill O'Reilley who said that one of the reasons why, has to do with the proliferation of niche, specialized media outlets that pander to a specific clientel.....AND, as Bill even admitted to: "the American people what to hear dirt". Bad news sells, and he said that people like Rush are "enormously profitable" because he sells what people want - dirt.

It's actually pretty sad. My dad, in particular, is a very bright, well educated individual...who use to be far more open and opjective on politics and current events. He was always a republican, but never was he this closed to new ideas.

He's become what Fox News helped him to become. And to a large extend, like all woman of that era, my mom has simply followed suite.

But I love them both, dearly.

You said your parents are in their 90s. You have to cut them some slack. At that age, the mind just isn't as nimble as before. Bless them--you won't have them much longer.

Actually, boith parents are still mentally active. It's the body that is failing.

I do cut them slack. I simply don't engage in ANYTHING political. My dad and I keep it to sports.

I'm hoping they both reach 100!!

Oh, and in all fairness to my parents viewing habits - I have gained a new respect for Bill O'Reilly. He's actually pretty decent and not a complete flamer. For the most part, he has some valid points, and tries to remain objective. I can respect that.

I thoroughly enjoyed his book, "The Killing of Lincoln". IMO, a must read for every American.

How is this new when compared to society 20 years ago, 50 years ago, 100 years ago, and 2000 years ago? Can you tell me that CBS 50 years ago didn't have any bias or leaning? Has academia always been unbiased up until now? Have religions only now begun to brainwash followers with their memes? Nothing major has changed other than the method of delivery. Perhaps a bit more efficient than ever before but ultimately, people choose to believe what they want to believe. As I said, it did not appear you or your wife were adversely affected. Annoyed perhaps but not affected.

They used to have a sign in stage coaches that read: "No politics, religion or cigars."

Why do you believe they are so wrong, and you are so right?

Ever hear of egocentrism? How much do we all "suffer" from it?

Sunspot is truly a microcosm and reflection of The Electorate. That woman's rant was so far to the right that even posters on both sides of the fence here on Sunspot don't want to go where she went.

I wonder though if that YouTube rant was tongue-in-cheek at an opportune moment.

No it isn't. Assuming that wasn't fake. But this is the type of "hateful" Obama Supporter that Democrats allow to be Official Poll Watchers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddRNy4MISkg

No. She's really that bat-s*** crazy. I googled her name and got her facebook page. All kinds of crazy stuff on there. I did like that she called out the birthers, truthers and Obama is a Muslim folks. Terry K probably won't be happy about her opinion on birthers.

Some of his earlier stuff...but in all of the stuff I saw in August, he was pretty tame, IMO. But that's all relative to other's I listened to...

Maybe that's part of the strategy? They bombard you with true flames like Hannity, Rush and tht neo-Nazi chick...followed by O'Reilly. By that point, O'Reilly looks like a lib?
